PhatDad Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Hi,Got a puncture today. AA came out and stuck some of that gooey stuff in and then plugged it as it was too big a hole for just the goo. He said because of the plug I should not exceed 40mph and get the tire replaced. After reading loads of stuff on here about people getting tires plugged I was wondering whether this was the case or can i keep riding? The location of it is just off centre. If the side stand was on the right then it would be on the floor while leaning in that direction so not too far off centre. Quote
Guest Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Speaking as an ex tyre fitter, get it sorted Ian! Quote
Guest Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Now I am at a lappy, and not my phone .....You may find that a tyre fitter will say the tyre is shagged cos of the green goey stuff ...not necessarily the case though, take it to a back street tyre place (but a good one lol) also if the puncture itself exceeds 6mm, it cannot be fixed.Your location sounds fine though. TC Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Your location sounds fine though. WTF has being in Nottingham got to do with getting a tyre fixed Quote

The guy said that the Goo is waterbased so can be washed out. Here's a photo.http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/9448/photo2tjs.jpg Quote
Guest Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Should be ok, the waterbased stuff, cant tell from the pic if the damage is too bad though ... Quote
Colin the Bear Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 That's a big hole is that. I'd be replacing it. Annoying with having so much tread on it. I run plugged tyres on the car, but not on the bike. Quote
Roadtorque Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Your Choice,,, but for me peace of mind on two wheels, I'd change it,,, Quote
Grumpy Old Git Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 There may be an option to plug it and fit an inner tube. You should be able to get good advice from a fitting shop - expecially if you inform the fitter that you will search for a cheaper tyre (than the one they are shure to quote you) from the interweb.Best not to risk riding at the moment (although I do realise that you don't have much choice regarding transport) until it is sorted. GarethNW Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 I bought a new rear tire and then found a small screw had punctured it. The tire still had above 30psi at the time and as I touched the screw it let a small amount of air out!I basically rode home at 30mph and went straight to my bike shop. I have never liked the idea of repairing a tire but becasue the hole was so small I was advised to use a plug. I am about to change said tire as its at the end of its life but the plug seemed to have worked fine for me. Where i realized how plugs worked it kind of gave me a bit of faith as at worst all I could see it doing is needing a top up of air once a week rather than exploding under presure and leaving me on my bum.The hole was 4mm at most and the engineer did say any bigger and he wouldnt do it. fredc Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 I think you should all be aware that there are 2 types of tyre plug temporary - fitted from outside the tyrehttp://www.motofab.com/images/repair/string_plug/plug_insert.jpg permanent - fitted from inside the tyre and Vulcanized http://home.comcast.net/~netters2/pics11-3-03/bigimages/MeZ3TirePlug.jpgthe temporary plug is only a get-you-home repair and should be replaced with a permanent plug asapa permanent plug should last the life of the tyre Quote
GarethNW Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 I got the good one and tbh I cant see how they would fail for a small hole Quote
