Been looking around at what type of luggage i should get and i am still not sure...

I have limited funds so something cheepish would be good. Was looking at the oxford first time stuff and the paniers seem ok, but not sure weather a top box will be a better option.

I have a CBR600F and will be traveling from plymouth to winchester for weekend stays (gf) i also want the option to easily carry my DSLR camera around as one of the best bits of biking is the landscapes you get to see.

A top box seems the most secure and best but dose the rack have to aways be attached to the bike? as imo they spoil the look when you dont need the top box... or are the racks easy to take off as well as the topbox?

Any suggestions will be appreciated or what you use yourself and why :)

Thanks.

waterproof rucksack - cheap, doesnt ruin the lines of the bike, because its stuck to your back it doesnt effect ballance much

Top box - althogh secure and can be left with the bike, can ruin the handling. I havnt actually had one myself but i have heard of people that have and if what ever is in the box is heavy and loose, it slides around in the box and can pull the bike to the side and ruins the handling

imo, get a rucksack :)

Ive got a Givi Top Box and Panniers and they are very easy to take off including all the bracketry (Set of Allen Keys and a Spanner or two). Although I have tended to leave mine on as its a good place to store the general crap :!: that is nice to take on a ride. I must admit that I have not loaded the top box up with something heavy and so I haven't noticed any problems with the handling.

The cheapest option is a rucksack as the panniers and top boxes are expensive. Sometimes I use mine for travelling to work and need to carry a laptop and I always have that on my shoulders. :D

I picked up a pair of brand new Oxford First Time panniers for £35 from eBay. Bit of a faff when you first get them trying to figure out the best way to fix them on your bike but once you know how it only takes a few minutes.

A top box and rack will be the most waterproof and secure, but I am sure looking at your bike taking off the rack will be a fiddle. The top box will easily come on and off.

If all you are taking is clothes and a camera you could get a tail bag and put the camera in with clothes. If you put you clothes and stuff into poly bags into the tail bag then they will not get wet. I use one of these

which will come on and off easily. The only issue may be the waterproof cover billowing up in the wind, but you get numerous bungess with the bag and could put some over the top,

Top box every time for me. the box can be taken off and used like a suitcase when your touring. Just unclip it from the bike and carry it to the hotel.

When your not using it, you can remove the rack and replace the grab rails with 4 bolts (on mine anyway) easy to do takes 5 mins.

When you stop to take a photo, I dont even have to take my gloves off to open the top box and get the camera out.

The BIG downside against a rucksack is that it will add to fatigue eventually. Why carry the weight when the bike can carry it for you, as well as being fiddley when you stop and need to get something out.

Never happened to me once in thirty years of riding.

Your mate needs to sort out how the box is fixed to the bike and what kind of load he is putting in unsecured.

cheers for the replies guys :)

that tail bag throttled linked looks quite promising.

some people have mentioned online about using bungees and a normal bag (waterproof). How easy is it to secure a bag to the back of a bike? really dont like the idea of it coming lose and locking up the back wheel. As this could be used for my main luggage and a small non magnetic tank bag for the camera and map.

The Weise tail bag has integral bungess and will not come off. They do a nice tank bag, made to the same standard which is where I kept my camera during tours and I could easily carry it about with me.

The tail pack dose look good. But the tank bag is magnetic and dont really want strong magnets near my camera :(

Might go for that tail bag and get a non magnetic tank bag

I had not thought about that. But neither the camera nor the mobile I have had shown any adverse affects being in the tank bag.

I don't know how much heat your DSLR camera can tolerate. Probably more than it might be exposed to, regardless of where you carry it. But I think a pannier is definitely not good for a camera. Lots of heat from the muffler, especially when the bike is parked.

If you get a tank bag, make sure it won't interfere with the handlebar ends when you're doing slow speed, tight turns.

I've got a Buffalo tail bag which carries a fair amount of stuff and is mounted on a Renntec rack but it's a bit of a pain with the bungees, zips etc. I saw another Gladius which had a rack for a hard topbox and thought it looked really good without the box, and am tempted to get one as it will be more secure and far easier to access and lock. Only drawback is the price!

I got a top box and the sport rack, used to use a tail pack but there a bal ache faff compared to the top box, however my rack is a knobache to remove but its not like i need to!

As for the point about handling lol what a joke, mine can be overweight and i dont ride any different and i keep having to reach back to see if its still there!!

Went with a oxford tailpack in the end as it seemed roughly the right size and like the idea of being able to get another base in the future if i want to use it as a tank bag.

What dose everyone use to insure that the bungies dont scratch the bike? was thinking of a type of tape but not sure what will give the most protection and not leave sticky residue (was thinking duck tape but think it might mess up the bike)
