JonR Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Hi, i need some help, i have a 2008 Yamaha YBR and it just does not sound right, iv just moved to London and see a lot of YBR's now and they don't sound like mine, it just sounds like its struggling, more like a pit bike than a ybr. also it sounds like it struggles once it goes over 30mph, although if iv been riding a while that seems to sort itself out. revs wise it seems ok, any suggestions as i dot know the first thing about engines? pointblank0 Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 When you say sounds like a pit bike, do you mean the heavy rattling drive chain sort of noise? If so, your drive chain is probably loose and slapping the swing arm, would explain why it quietens down after about 30mph.If it's coming from the engine, could be due to low oil, or just not leaving it to warm up before riding. My drive chain slaps a little but it to it's correct free travel, could be because the guy who had it before me had fitted smaller sprockets. JonR Posted August 28, 2012 Author Posted August 28, 2012 hey, thanks for the replies, not sure if iv left the choke on, no idea where the choke is, will have a look.not sure exactly how to describe it, it just sounds like the engine is struggling and it gets worse the faster i go, after 30mph it starts to feel like it needs to change gear again even though im in fifth gear (hits 6000revs) but after 20 mins riding it seems to go better, i generally warm the bike up for a couple of mins before starting. sorry i cant be more descriptive its just hard to describe Quote
Adam Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Have you checked the basics to begin with I.e. Coolant, gearbox oil, engine oil, is your chain clean and well lubed up? Air filter clean? Have you got a good spark? How much 'play' does your chain have? ( how much you can move it up and down ) It's best to check these things first because they're always the cheapest! Quote
pointblank0 Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Strange. Check the choke like said in the other post. Not sure where it is on one of them but probably on the side of the carb. Could be low compression. Check that and see if it marries up roughly to the specs. Quote
Susieque Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 i generally warm the bike up for a couple of mins before starting. When you say 'a couple of minutes' how long exactly - 2 mins, 5 mins??? I've got a YBR & to start it I have to open the choke fully & start it without touching the throttle. Have to leave it like that for probably 3/4 mins then gradually shut off the choke a bit at a time - still NOT touching the throttle.Once it's ticking over with no choke I can then try revving it gently - if I twist the throttle sharply it'll probably cut out!In all, it probably takes a good 8-10 mins to be fully warmed up & ready to go!! rennie Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 if yours is the same as Susieque's,the choke is on the left, a black plastic lever,on the side of the carb.you lift it fully up to put the choke on to start the bike,on hers you then have to leave it for a good whilebefore putting the lever down fully, choke off, then riding away. There's no way hers would start from cold without choke!Which is what makes me think yours is stuck on. we're both posting at the same time! JonR Posted August 29, 2012 Author Posted August 29, 2012 again thanks for all the replies. the bike starts first time and i can drive off straight away (however saying that, sometimes i wont start with the electric starter at all. unless i put it in neutral.). i just tend to start the bike, put on my gear and then drive away so generally no more than 2 mins at most. (just curious if i have had the choke on all this time will it have done serious damage) iv had the bike for 12 months now. im going to check the chain, air filter, engine oil and spark plug tomorrow day, (i know the chain is at least slightly loose) Quote

Fml, I may go see if I can find it, mines being a b*tch to start atm! Mine is a 2008 too, I am sure I looked for a choke before, so its possile the 2008 models dont have them. I will check though Quote
Throttled Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 Later YBRs have an automatic choke, not a manual one. After 2008 they switched from carburetor to fuel injection. Quote

Harrydh3 Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 just because you can RIDE off straight away doesnt mean you should.1. start the bike2. you'll hear the revs pick up as the auto choke cuts in3. wait for the revs to drop back down as the choke shuts off4. have a cigarette and wait 5 mins for good measure5. rideyou dont really need to do this with fuel injection bikes. but i do anyway, just to be on the safe side Quote
JonR Posted September 7, 2012 Author Posted September 7, 2012 Hi guys, gonna start warming the bike up more, changed the spark plug and oil, got a new air filter im putting on tomorrow and need to tighten the chain. the engine still sounds bad, will try it after air filter and warming up, and get back to you all. thanks again for the help. I will check though Mines a 2006 model and i have a choke use it everyday to help get the bike warmed up, then flick it off before i drive off. Its on the left side, next to the carb and its a black ended lever/switch. Up means on, down means off I have a kick start too, but have never successfully used it lol Quote
