Guest Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 HiA VT500E puzzleI have a whooshing noise on my VT500, It sound very similar to the cooling fan coming onI can hear it mainly at about 30-40mph however when stopping to have a look it stops. The sound remains constant even if I pull in the clutch, increase the engine speed, or slow down I have blocked up all vents the, wedged paper in the fan to stop it turning, move the horn and even changed my lid (just in case)no idea what it is has anybody else come across this...!thankswilf Quote
Stu Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Is it chain or shaft drive? could it be related to that at all seems odd what about taking it out of gear and switching it off to try and pin point it it might not be engine related off road of course Quote
Guest Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 It's shaft driveI've tried changing up and down gears as well, still there. The noise comes and goes so I've ruled out wind relatedthe other option is to try running it in gear whilst on it's centre stand - but only on a straight road whilst on itI'm suspecting water pump or clutch but cannot understand why I wouldn't hear it whilst running in neutral Quote
Tango Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 What condition are your tyres? Worn tyres can cause more road noise. Also, what condition are your wheel bearings? Worn or Dry bearings could cause some noise. Also check your disks and pads......all stuff that are more related to road speed than engine speed..... Quote
Guest Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 The tyres are in good condition about half way through their lifethe front wheel bearings were replaced not so long ago and the noise still persists evenwhen applying the breaks either front or back.i'm stlll puzzled Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 i would be checking those crap inboard discs for any warpage or problems Quote
Roadtorque Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Sounds like wind noise,, If the bike runs ok with no other problems,, why worry I would worry about stopping a fan turning, its liable to burn out Quote
Tango Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Sounds like wind noise,, If the bike runs ok with no other problems,, why worry I would worry about stopping a fan turning, its liable to burn out I accidentally stopped the fan on my Speed 4 when I had it.......took a fuse out and brought on the MIL light......Doh... The fan shouldn't run all the time anyway....especially this time of year......mine only comes on when I'm stuck in traffic at slow speeds.... Quote
Guest Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Checked the front disk all fine (yes brakes are crap but I look at it as a learning experiance)I noticed the noise because it sound so like the cooling fan but the bike was cold.Had the bike running in 3rd on the centre stand and there is a vibrating from under the fairing could be this?nothing elsenot had chance to try the switching off the engine trial yet weather has been crap Quote
Tango Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Had the bike running in 3rd on the centre stand and there is a vibrating from under the fairing could be this? Could be that something is loose on the fairing which is making it noisy at a certain speed. I'd go right the way around the fairing and all panels and check that they are all tight.... Quote
Colin the Bear Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 I seem to remember having a bike that made a whooshing noise and it was the induction noise from the carbs. Quote
Guest Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 Finally got the chance to try the switching off the engine suggestion.Noise still there, so I guess this points to either wind noise or the front wheelI'll check the carbs suggestion nextthanks Quote
mealexme Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 when I first read it i thought wind noise tooclose your helmet - but on a serious note, are you sure it isnt the helmet? The linig may have stretched just that little bit over the last week allowing wind noise to reach your ear through the side panels or chin skirtas for the bike, does it sound like the wind or vibrations? My right fairing has just started to vibrate when warming the bike up, and the screen vibrates at a certain rpmYou could try just holding random parts of the bike to see if its that bit vibrating and check things are tight and not cracked. I was riding with someone who hit a large pot hole and cracked the front cowling mounts and the rear end mounts, all his body work was falling off by the time he got home, but we stopped a few times with him complaining about the noise before we figured it out Quote
Colin the Bear Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 Finally got the chance to try the switching off the engine suggestion.Noise still there, so I guess this points to either wind noise or the front wheelI'll check the carbs suggestion nextthanks If you've turned the engine off it won't be the carbs now will it?I think you're trying to solve a problem you don't have. I believe sky divers get a wooshing noise as they jump out of the plane.Get some ear plugs Quote
Grumpy Old Git Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Comes and goes? Check the road surface as the noise starts/stops.I get the same noise (from the road surface) on my bike - used to think it was wind around the cowl fairing but it is definetly road noise. Quote
Guest Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 thanks for all the suggestionsSo far I've tried and checked all suggestions without luck. yep changed my lid it was the first thing.more of a whirring than whooshing sound that why I thought it was the cooling fan.got no idea, has been suggested at the bike club it's the gear box, I'll not going to bother checking thatjust wait till it breaks. Medic Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 Apologies if it sounds obvious, but have you tried taking it to a garage and asking them? Quote
