Guest Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Saw a helmet on eBay 30 quid new... Is it going to save your head in a crash? It's a show sniper Quote
Tango Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Depends on the crash.... Fit is probably more important than anything else when buying a lid......too loose and it could come off in a smash....too tight and you'll get headaches which can distract you when riding..... Always, Always try a lid on before buying....just coz you always take a medium doesn't mean that all medium lids fit the same..... Quote
Bogof Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Saw a helmet on eBay 30 quid new... Is it going to save your head in a crash? It's a show sniper Personally I'd steer clear of anything that doesn't get a good rating here http://sharp.direct.gov.uk/Also, fit is all important. Make sure you are able to try a helmet on before you buy it. Quote
Tango Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 As Bogof says......check the lids on the Sharp website....not all 4 and 5 star rated lids cost the earth..... Quote
mealexme Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 I would avoid anything from ebay tbf.helmets I will only buy from a reputable shop (not online) Quote
techno Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 Mine isnt even on that sharp website to check, not that ive ever looked on there, wasnt it classed as a floored system when it first came out due to some more upmarket lids scoring not too well?I would avoid anything from ebay tbf.helmets I will only buy from a reputable shop (not online) This +1! Joeman Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 If they have the British standard kite mark, a 30 quid lid is probably as affective as more expensive lids.Quality and finish are likely to be poor and would expect wind noise from badly fitting visor. But basic principle of hard outer shell with onetime collapsible foam lining to reduced head declaration is pretty easy to make if not worried about lightweight or wind noise. A 30 quid lid today is probably safer than a 100quid lid was 10years ago... Quote
freetime101 Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 It also depends how fast you might be going if you crash - a £30 lid might fair the same as a £300 lid if you're going 30mph, but a 200mph crash would be a different story...As others have said, fit is key! So long as it has the kite mark it should be safe Also look for the sharp rating and gold sticker but take these with a pinch of salt... Quote
Stu Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 So long as it has the kite mark it should be safe Every helmet has to meet certain specs before it can get the kite mark and be sold in the UK So every helmet you see for sale will have met the minimum safety specs Quote
Tiggie Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 as has been said, fit is key. though if you buy a cheap one get a some ear plugs too Quote
Guest Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 Ok, Must admit im very confused! This 40 quid helmet http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130795231797? ... 1423.l2649has a higher SHARP rating than this 90 quid one! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251173296200? ... 1423.l2649Its for my wife and obviously I have limited funds but Should I not go for the safest one?? Quote
techno Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 also, what is pin lock ready?Pin lock ready means the little pins you normally have to drill the visor and fit yourself are already in the visor. Quote

Tango Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 It's been said several times above.....but I can't stress enough that the fit is MOST IMPORTANT...... A £600 lid that falls off in an accident due to poor fit is worse than a £40 lid that fits correctly and stays on...... Take the missus to a local bike shop and get her to try on as many lids as they have......or wait for the next bike show and go and try lids on there..... Quote
freetime101 Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Take the missus to a local bike shop and get her to try on as many lids as they have......or wait for the next bike show and go and try lids on there..... I took my gf to a bike shop and made her try on loads of helmets, it turns out the only ones that fit are either a £80 no name or a £400 shoei... Quote
Babba Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 What exactly are you asking of the internets? Is it OK to wear a £30 helmet? Is a £30 helmet better than a £300 helmet? The 'off' that will kill you doesn't care what helmet you happen to be wearing at the time. Quote

Joeman Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 wtf joeman?dont depress me...they do fit i f**king measured our heads! Lol, have they arrived yet?? Chances of one internet bought lid fitting well is slim. Chances of two fitting is virtually non-existent!!so much more involved than the circumference of your heads!! Quote
Stu Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 obviously you haven't read what everyone has written!! fit is more important then price you must go try them on before you buy!! Quote
Guest Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 well i live in the middle of no where the nearest motorbike shop is 55 miles awayim sure they wll fit, (insert innapropriate joke about Nazi head measurements here) Quote
Colin the Bear Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 This reminds me of when I worked at the rubber factory and an order from the Russian army for 3 million condoms came in. The dimensions required were a length of 10". We filled the order and marked the boxes medium. With shoes you can order a size bigger and wear socks. This might work for a helmet but you'll need to cut holes in the socks to see where you're going Quote
