Something missing from rear wheel - safe to ride to garage?

So I was looking over the bike after getting home from work, and I noticed something was missing from the rear wheel. I think it was a pipe protruding from the hole between the 4 wheel nuts. So, what is missing, and what was its function? Hope someone can help. Slightly alarming tbh!

Oh and its a 1998 vfr800fiw. Hopefully you can see some pictures below.

I panicked and thought you had a missing rear spindle at first :shock:


if you look closely at this picture of a vfr800 you will see its normal

Thanks for the reply. I've since been looking at pics and Haynes manual too. It does seem to be normal. I'm thinking maybe there was a cap or cover there as there certainly wasn't just a hole there, and also it's clean inside, and as you can see, the bike is not!
