eastanglianbiker Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 if you havent found any big amounts of alloy swarf then you need t o check things out as it means it could still be laying in the bottom of the engine and also in the alternator case and clutch case.i would be taking both off to check all is clean and ok in there Quote

Anywhere the oil can go, so too can the metal fragments.If a replacement engine is only 300quid delivered that's by far the best option IMO. Time is money and there's a lot of time and replacement parts needed to bring that back from the dead. Quote

Im sure if you give you engine the necessary checks, like big end bearing etc, you could get away with just a top end rebuild..After all, thats what oil filters are for, the shards of metal in the oil...Could always get some engine flush, and give it a good flush out before hand...be even better if the barrel score wasnt so deep, could get the barrel re-bored and fit a new piston Quote

A new cylinder and piston set is half the price of the another engine I'd rather spend that other half on the engine for the TZR Hmmmmmm, not looked at the oil filter yet Allan Where does the oil go around? Guest Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 it runs everywhere mate.Gearbox, cools the stator coils, the crank shaft splashes it up into the bottom of the piston and barrel, the piston oil scraper rings scrapes it back down, and goes up into the head to lubricate the valves/tapets.. etc Quote

Fozzie Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 You will need a 1/2" torque wrench to put it back together I'm looking at reputable brands to use for a top end rebuild Ricky don't worry If you're still in a spot of bother end of next week remember I'm up so should be able to help.Can see the pictures properly now and I can tell yours has suffered the same fate as many YZF's do. Pull the oil filter and check for metal shards in there. Usually what happens is the piston skirt begins catching for some reason and it buckles and slaps about. There won't be much in the way of debris but it just takes one bad bit to cause havoc. So if confident get it to pieces and try cleaning all the major components, if not leave it alone Quote

Grumpy Old Git Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Look at it this way - You want to learn all about motorcycle engines?Then take this oppurtunity - Do a full strip down, clean and inspection.If there is more significant damage elswhere, then replace the complete engine, if not, then rebuild the top end, put everthing back together (new gaskets / seals are a must).As to the top end rebuild, re-bore if it will take it, or, get the barrel turned out and a sleeve fitted. or even replace the cylinder for a new one, new piston, etc.If you get stuck somewhere on the tear down, take piccy, explain your problem and someone on here is bound to have the answer!Go for it! Just some paper towels and elbow grease? Is there anything in particular I'm looking for?A new piston, cylinder and a gasket set is about 170 quid so I'm going to get that once my new card has come so I can use online banking again Quote
