Phooey Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Had a little rideout yesterday, 70/80 miles, and twice during the ride I experienced a strange thing with the gears. I lifted my toe slightly to take up the slack on the gear lever, as I always do, and on two occasions before I even touched the clutch lever, the gears rolled through a gear or two as if the cogs were slipping. I have just fitted a new clutch cable which is adjusted correctly, the chain and sprocket has been checked and is also fine. My mechanic mate doesn't have the time to take a look at it at the moment so I thought that I would ask you guys what you thought. Is there a problem with the gearbox/clutch? Is this normal and I am just too inexperienced to realise it?Answers on a postcard please! Quote
Chrissb6 Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Morning, you have to remember that a motor bike gear box is a constant mesh gear it is not none synchromesh like a car hence the need to blip the throttle slightly to match the engine speed with the selected gear. No need to touch the lever unless your changing gear, some boxes are very trigger happy. This video might help you"> Quote
Joeman Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 clutchless gearchange is normal, all bikes will do that, but when you say "the gears rolled through a gear or two as if the cogs were slipping" not sure what you mean! Quote

The best I can describe it is when the gears on a pushbike 'slipped' across the cogs when the lever was in between gears. You can hear and feel them not quite engage and then clicks into gear. Thanks Chris. Will look at that vid later. Quote
Mr Fro Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Sounds pretty normal.I'd put money on you applying gentle pressure to the lever and having a pretty neutral throttle i.e. neither accelerating or decelerating.Congratulations, you've stubled upon something we all love to discuss at length! Quote

Next week counter-steering Quote
Grumpy Old Git Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 And once the countersteering debate ends, can we have 'nodding'? Quote
Stu Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 As Joeman said really Only your sticking it in to what the call a false neutral Quote
Tango Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Some bikes like the gear lever to be pre-loaded before changing up.....but, as others have said, some bikes have a hair trigger and will slip into a false neutral if you're not careful..... Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 it also tends to show up if you change what boots you wear due to the difference in feel to your foot caused by the boots Quote
