Riding on L plates on the road before taking CBT

Recommended Posts

Yes. The morning starts with stuff in the class room as they have to assume you have never driven on the road at all, not even a car. So they go over the Highway Code, some law and some hazard perception. Then you spend the rest of the morning in a yard where you are shown the basics of how to push a bike, get on it and the controls. You then get to ride about around cones and start changing gear and using the brakes. Have some lunch and then you go out with an instructor and a radio link and ride around the streets. You spend about 2-3 hours riding around and around going left, right, round a bouts etc.

You will be in a small group as the instructor can take up to three people at a time. So drivers know to keep clear :D

you can have your own bike deliverred to the cbt test centre but it has to be fully legal tax insurance and mot and they will allow you to use it but if they decide that you are not up to cbt standard and need more training then your bike is stuck there ntill you can either pass cbt and ride home with smile on your face or get someone with van/trailer to collect

This. It's easy. And even if you find it hard, you'll get it :thumb: (tbh I found gear changing hard, had never even driven a car and didn't know what to expect really). After you pass (because you will!), I highly recommend going for rides with people if you can find anyone to ride with after to help build your confidence/learn a bit more. Or pay a bit extra for another half day with an instructor or something 8-) . Good luck!

If you want some experience before hand see if any local school participates in the "get on" scheme. Basically a free couple of hours on a 125.

Webshite here - http://www.geton.co.uk/

I forgot about that. I had a two hour go around the yard before I took my CBT. Still feels like yesterday :D

Really?! Mine feels like ten years ago...even though it was only 2 and a half years ago! Probably because so much happened in that 2.5 years...

...or 6 months ago if you count the second CBT

Hmm, that reminds me, have you booked your test yet Moo?

Nope. Don't have the dosh for it right now - went self employed in July, had a holiday, needed spending money, don't obv get annual leave anymore, and the money I have left (from that insurance thing!) I am hanging onto - I like to have just-in-case money, though I will need new gear for winter soon.

So the L plates are staying for the mooment. The only thing that would hurry it up is if I get my first speeding ticket...5:30am on Wed I was heading to St Paul's Cathedral area and got double flashed :crybaby: :crybaby: . Apparently if you get 6 points you lose your license on a provisional, and I can't run that risk.

Ideally I'd have a car for winter as I'm out for up to 6 hours a day riding Ermintrude round London for work and I can't hack the cold, but won't be affordable, and I hate traffic anyhoo! See what happens. I'm in no rush, though it'd be nice to get rid of the L plates...they charge a bloody fortune to hire a bike and to 'be escorted' for your test here!!

Thanks for asking :) . Do you ride through the winter? I did to and from work etc last year 8 miles each way, and that was cold enough! I used to stop to wasm my hands on the engine!

Look up New Driver Act. If you get 6 pts on a new full licence you also lose it.

Maybe slowing down would be advisory? :D

I was slightly over by mistake, first time caught out in 2.5 years, I'm sure you always ride to the exact speed limit and under though!

Oh well, see what happens...fingers and toes crossed.

practice u-turns/ slow manouvers on a push bike!

I know it sounds daft but it works.

Haha cheers! I'll be getting my pushbike back from my nan's at some point and riding it a lot more. I remember feeling caught out by the swerve avoidance cos when I practiced it I had a massive run-up and when I took the test it was a MUCH shorter ride to the cone! Wasn't in the right frame of mind for it anyway. I will do it some day.

In the meantime I have two Hello Kitty stickers to put on my back L plate hahaha! Gonna buy some cow stickers for my wingmirrors too - and considering peeling the black stickers off my tank and fairings and cutting out some black vinyl and making some cow patches for her...

Have a great holiday with Sue btw 8-)
