Jackroutledge92 Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Ok so I bought my bike on Tuesday (cbr600f) and the rear tyre has reached the limiter bits on the tread in the middle. Just been and priced a tyre and asked for an all round touring type tyre.. I was recommended a maxis the size is 160/60/17 I think and I done the noob thing and forgot to find out exactly which maxis tyre it is. Does anyone have any history with these tyres are they sufficient I was gonna go with bt016 as I've had them on a previous bike but the maxis is 76 and bt016 is 106... is it worth paying the extra for the battlax or with the maxis suffice... btw I'm not the most extrodianery rider and only just got back on a bike after 2 years off so no rossi style riding will apply! Azen Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Hi Jack there is a tyre review part on the forums from the forums I'm going for BT45's for my XJ600 Quote
Whitey1984 Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 What year is the cbr? my '99 had a 180/55/17 as standard.Only experience of Maxxis were on my mates bike and i didnt like them, just didnt feel stable going round bends at half decent speeds. This was about 5 years ago though so they might have improved by now!! Quote
wr6133 Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 I had maxxis supermaxx touring things on my zzr thought they took ages to get warm, seemed skittish in the wet and it was quite easy to spin up the rear. That said they were a little old when I got the bike.I put on Pilot Road and they are awesome, grip like mad, behave in all weather and they seem to hardly wear down. Pilot road 2, 3 &4 are all meant to be even better.Tyres last a while and are pretty important buy the best you can afford. Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 I had maxxis on my fj1100 and my fireblade they seemed ok to me and at the cheaper end of the market Quote
Jackroutledge92 Posted April 24, 2015 Author Posted April 24, 2015 Thanks for the replies! It's a 97 model f-w and I think I'm going to stick with what I know and get a battlax... I'm sure my life is worth the extra 20 quid!Cheers guys Quote
Steve D Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 Yep, tyres are the one thing I would never, ever skimp on on a bike. Quote
Dav3y Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 I had BT021's on my XJ6, they squared off in no time. Replaced them with PR3's and what a fantastic tyre both in the wet and long lasting. On my Z1000SX I had S20R's, although a much better performing tyre, again the rear squared off very quickly. Have replaced these with Maxxis Supermax Diamond and so far they're pretty good. Just waiting for the wet weather. Quote
Jackroutledge92 Posted April 25, 2015 Author Posted April 25, 2015 Well the wet weather has well and truly arrived in the north east! So no riding today.. I have however been out and bought every cleaning product possible to give the new girl a well deserved clean this week! Also got a quote for a bt023 while I was out 130 quid fitted... seems a little more than I expected I can get a bt016 fitted at my local honda for 110... and the maxxis fitted for 100 at an independent garage... still unsure as to what to go for and pay day is vastly approaching Quote
Joeman Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 If it was me, I'd pay the extra few quid for the BT023. But shop around, you might find it cheaper. You could even buy it online and take it to a tyre fitter to be fitted. Thats what I did with my BT023's. I tied them to my back (I looked like a ninja turtle) and rode them to the tyre fitting place. Quote
Jackroutledge92 Posted April 26, 2015 Author Posted April 26, 2015 How much would you expect to pay to have it fitted? I've been quoted 25 as I have thought about buying online and then just getting it fitted Quote
Whitey1984 Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 £10 plus vat for loose wheels so £12.50 a wheel. Or £30 a wheel if i just take the bike to them.First impression of the Metzlers are good however as the weather was rubbish at the weekend i have only covered about 10 miles so far Will put a tyre review up once ive had a decent ride out! This is taken from their website (i quoted 50p too much) http://www.bldgroup.co.uk/service-repai ... ike-tyres/I presume because they are a big company so will be VAT registered! Quote
Guest Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 I use the same size and my tyre needs replacing really due to age. It's s BT021 and after trawling thro the net BT023 or PR3 seem to be the best. Try www.openeo.co .uk. Cheapest I found for BT023 Quote
klingelton Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 You only get a very small contact patch with the road. make it the best you can afford.I'm a big advocate of road pilot 2's. i replaced the battleaxes with these and they were confidence inspiring. It felt like a whole new bike. Quote
bmwdave Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I switched to Michelin PR3 last spring and am hugely impressed, feel much better. Will go for the PR4 next time but don't know when that will be as 7k miles on almost no visible wear or squaring off. Quote
