LittleRider Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I've got a little YBR 125. Only bought it a few weeks ago.The back break is squeaking whenever i apply pressure to it (use the break). It's really damn annoying, quiet a handy car deter-ant though. We recently took the break off to give the whole area a good clean and to see what needed replacing etc.It didn't speak when i got it, it started doing it after we took it off. Any idea's as to why it would be doing this? Only thing i can think of is there might be a bit of dirt on the pads. But i'm a novice, hence why i'm reaching out to you wonderful people.Just wanted ideas on what to look for when we take it apart again. Quote
soll Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 did you apply some copper grease to the back of the pads, often helps (assuming its disc brakes)if it didntr squeek when you got it, then you did something Quote
Tiggie Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 pads put on back to front? yes its possible and no I won't tell you how I know Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 pads put on back to front? yes its possible and no I won't tell you how I know but if its drum brake then you might need to remove rear wheel clean the brake dust out of the drum and possibly remove the glaze off the brake shoe surface Quote
RantMachine Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 It's a drum brake, isn't it? Does the brake have a sort on on-off feeling when you're applying it, almost like there's a pulsing motion to the braking? Could be that the drum is a bit oval and needs to be skimmed or changed, that can make it squeal a bit. My front brake is going that way, need to get it sorted some time soon. Quote
LittleRider Posted November 5, 2015 Author Posted November 5, 2015 Its a drum, i think i'm gonna have to do what eastanglianbiker said and remove the rear wheel again, give it all a good clean out again. RantMachine, it doesn't feel on/off, works fine when you use it. Just the noise. I think i may purchase a new drum just to be on the safe side. Quote
oldie59 Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Could just need a clean out (the brake shoes might also need roughing up a bit with emery cloth) or at the worst new brake shoes. It doesn't sound like there is anything wrong with the drum. Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 you cant just change the drum as its part of the rear wheel assembly just take the wheel off clean out any dust in there and rough up the face of the shoes as they often get a glaze on them and that adds to the squeaking noise Quote
Mr Fro Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Wot them boys said. Is it possible you put the shoes back the other way round than you found them when you took it apart first time? That can cause a bit of squeaking as the trailing edge can be a bit sharp on used shoes - it's a good idea to give the leading and trailing edge a bit of a tickle with sandpaper/file if your going to pop the old ones back in. Invisible_Man Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Hey,It'll be full of dust. Whip the back wheel out, measure the pads to make sure they aren't worn out, get rid of all the dust, lightly sand the drum and pads with wet and dry to remove the glaze and any imperfections and reassemble. I've always used a spot of copper slip on the sections of the pads that touch the drum (not the braking surfaces of course!).Ill be surprised if you've warped the drum. CG125 used to squel like f#ck until I cleared the dust.Nice easy job.Shaun Quote
LittleRider Posted November 6, 2015 Author Posted November 6, 2015 Cool, thanks guys. Think it will be a Saturday afternoon job. Noticed yesterday that it doesn't squeak when it's wet? Might have just been luck because that was the first time i'd notice it not squeak but not been out on it today. Quote
Guest Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 FWIW I have the same issue. I cleaned the drum, sanded the shoes, greased the whole brake system and suspension and the f*cker still squeals! No I just don't care lol. Quote
