Bloody computers.

I have had a right mare over xmas with my PC's. The lad is at uni doing a games programming degree. He has been using a laptop as the only tower PC we have is my old system which is a bit like triggers brush. IE its been added to and upgraded with new bits for years. Anyway I decided a while ago that he would need a PC for his course work and the easist way to achive that without me paying too much out was for me to build a new PC for myself and then make him a PC with the bits left over. Then next summer I can add a new mobo ( motherboard ) and graphic card to his PC and make a better one for his next uni year.

So over the last couple fo months I have been buying new cases , hard drives, DVd drives ETC. I ended up buying 2 of each as stuff like hard drives are soo cheap nowdays. So I finaly built mine up a couple of weeks before Xmas. I am now running a bit of a beast of a gaming machine so can run all new games at max ( which is nice).

So for xmas I gave him all his bits for his new tower and said I would build it this week. Well its turned into a right mare. It all started when I stuck all the new bits in his new case along with my old Mobo, chip memery and GFX card. It would power up but then just sit there. It would going into post mode at all. I tried everything like removing various bits and just running the board bare. Still no joy. I spent about 2 days off and on trying various things and checking various forums. Still nothing. I then tried breadboarding it ( IE running it out of the case with nothing plugged in) .Still no joy.

I took it round my mates to see if I had done somthing stupid like not plugging a cable in ( don't ask). Nope. Nothing obvious and he was stumped as well. This was the monday ( IE boxing day bank holiday). I tried various shops to see if I could get a Mobo to fit my chipset. Nope no chance as its an old socket 2+ chip. So it meant buying a new mobo , chip and ram ( so much for a cheap PC). I managed to find a PC shop on Ebay who deal with and sell 2nd hand tested stuff and they had some mother boards for sale for upto £40. So I emailed them to see if they were open on the tuesday. They were and I could pop over and they would test my Mobo out. They are in cannock which is about 40 miles from me. But it seemed the easiest option without spending too much money.

They did a quick test on my mobo and prounced it dead. So I purchased a 2nd hand mobo off them and came home. I then built the PC back up again and tried it thinking that will be it now. Nope still dead and the same symtoms as before. Power and fans but no post. AARRGGHH. So I emailed the shop again and they said bring it all over and they would take another look. So I popped over the enxt day and they took my original mobo and tried various chips and memory in it and yes it was dead.

They then took my PC case away and tried various chips in the " new" mobo. That would fire up with an older less powerfull chip in it. He then said that my CPu is about the best you could fit on the Mobo I was running but that the Bios maybe needed downloading to the board to run it. Given that I could get a peep out of it I was stuck. So he downloaded a bios for me with the older chip in and then stuck my original chip in and fired it up. I then left them with an up and running PC. He only charged me £20 to sort it out which given I was about 3/4 of an hour was fine.

So home I drove and then connected up all the drives and such like. I turn it on an then install Windows. Everything seems fine . But after a couple of days we noticed that its running very slow. Its slower than a very slow thing thats stuck in quick sand in fact. So i have now spent another day dicking around trying various things to try to sort it. Bear in mind that its not actually that bad a chip so can run modern games fairly well. I then decided this morning to stick my old hard drive in the lads PC ( which I was going to add to my new PC to back stuff up on) ( the hard drive is maybe 2 years old so not really old) . So I formated it this morning to wipe it clean and installed windows again. After much downloading of various drivers and other programs the good news is that its running like it used to . So it would seem I had a faulty hard drive as well. AAARRGGHHH bloody computers.

So the new Hard drive is going back mo be replaced with a non faulty one.

Well its sort of sorted. I had to make a new steam account as there was no way that I could connect up with my old account. Even trying all the "fixes" that supposedly work. Its a good job I don't play any of my old games anymore . I have since downloaded the latest the COD game for my pleasure as a but of mindless shooting helps unwind. I tried to access the new account today and its been hacked. So I am now in the porcess of locking it and then trying to get it back. The recovery email address was differant to mine.

SSD's are the best bang for buck part in a PC. In my last build I went for a 250GB boot SSD and a 3tb HDD.

I've been looking to get an SSD for a while now and there seems to be good deals for San disk popping up. Anyone know roughly what size I'd need to load Win 10 OS onto it? I'm guessing 960 GB is overkill.

I have a sandisk 128gb i got a couple years back. Not 100% sure on it as my PC sometimes has issues. Gonna try loading the OS onto a HDD see if i still get the issues.

When i say issues i mean.

PC starting up then taking 10minutes to load before i can click the start menu

Games laggy untill restart.

Hacked already?! I'm off to check my account now!

There was a massive security breach at some point over the Christmas holiday. All my gaming group were nattering about it on our whats app group..

Hope it all gets sorted soon for you Gautrek! Sounds like a real headache but I guess that's why you buy a pre-built machine. :(

I had the same idea as you, bought all the bits myself but ended up giving them all to a PC guy near me who charged £40 to get it all properly set up for me and never really had a problem. Think I got very very lucky!

Nightmare. I went to turn on the laptop a couple of days before xmas and it was just completely dead. Luckily my better half had got me a shiny new on for xmas.

My partner was using my macbook pro at the table with Xmas candles burning.. She left the lid open leaning over the candle flame!!

Surface of the lid was too hot to touch and is slightly discoloured... Still works though thankfully!

This sounds like exactly the dumbass thing my missus would do. She's had an ipad2 for 3 years now though and the thing is flawless... somehow!
