Quackerzakieee Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 Hi all, have had my headlight blow out on me last night on way home from work so need a new bulb was looking to get a led instead of halogen but cant seem to find any that'll fit a er5 any help appreciated Quote
gogs01 Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 My advice would be to save yourself a lot of grief and fit a replacement halogen bulb suitable for motorcycle use (more resistant to vibration than car types). Then, if you are worried about being left in the dark if / when it blows, or if you want more light than the halogen bulb provides, fit a pair of LED driving lights to run at the same time as your dipped / main beam. That would give you the best of all worlds. Quote
fastbob Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 I completely agree . It's a waste of time trying to fit an led bulb into a parabolic reflector that it was not designed for . Quote
Fleck Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 Agree too, standard halogen bulbs get hot and drive out any moisture from the housing Quote
fastbob Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 Here you go , this is a bike that a member of the ER5 forum rebuilt . They weren't too happy with the headlight either so they built a bracket and fitted auxiliary spot lamps . Quote
geofferz Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 He might prefer them cos they look cooler and are brighter? This guy is always right about everything and he doesn't mention a problem with LEDs in reflector housings - is it a myth? Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 He might prefer them cos they look cooler and are brighter? This guy is always right about everything and he doesn't mention a problem with LEDs in reflector housings - is it a myth? Apart from the fact that he has a very annoying voice - I watched this a while back and if I remember right he does say you need to be careful with LED 'bulbs' as they need LEDs in the right places to get the beam pattern right. I know guys who have tried LEDs in standard reflectors and gone back to halogen, but it's possible they'd bought cheaper versions. I know for classic cars with dodgy wiring fitting LEDs is one way to get decent lighting but you need to spend a lot of money on the LED units. If you're going LED probably better to bite the bullet and buy a whole new headlamp unit that is LED by design.
