Throw over saddle bags

I’m looking into throw over bags to put on my gsxf to give me some luggage space for trips this year, do I need an external frame or anything or are the bags themselves reinforced?

keep them away from hot exhausts

I had a set of oxford ones similar to these

They have three straps 

 

One under the seat and two over that you pull tight and they hold the panniers up 

 

They are fairly rigid and keep their shape they usually have some D rings on them too so you can stick a strap to foot pegs etc 

 

I went to Germany on a 4 day trip on the TL1000s with them and tested them to over 140 mph and I couldn't even tell they was there and they never budged

I have an oxford set or throw overs and an oxford tail pack and an oxford tank bag, again all tested to above 100mph (on private closed roads of course) and they too didnt affect the bike or move at all and they can take everything that I have ever needed for time away on the bike

I’ve just put a bid on some Oxford bags on eBay... see what happens 

will 48l be enough or would I always feel they’re to small?

I have no idea what they capacity of them are but I have never felt they couldn't handle what I was taking

I will fit them to the bike tomorrow morning and take a pic of it on the bike to show my set up, the tail pack has more than enough room for 2 weeks worth of clothes, a pair of trainers, and a good amount of food and drink, I can get a double airbed in one side of the panniers and in the other side a sleeping bag and a pillow, in the tank bag I usually have my walking boots (size 10) and my phone, wallet and tabs and a drink, ear plugs, spare gloves, map book, spare neck warmers then I strap my tent and camping chair is bungeed across the top of the panniers

It depends on what you intend on doing with them to be honest! 

 

As I say I had 4 days away with no issues and they wasn't expanded to still had room if needed

I had some throw over bags , didn't  like em , you thought of Kriega luggage good bit of kit, used this set up a few times , side bags detach ...

This is my setup as you can see is the oxford sports panniers, tail pack and tank bag all secured with bunjees and velcro straps on the panniers and tail pack and the tank bag via magnets in the wings then I just bungee tent and chair as shown in second picture all of this I can get enough gear taken with for a good few weeks away.

 

It also has multiple various pockets to enable you to carry odd n sods like any tools or whatnot that you think you may need so they are accessible without emptying the contents of the luggage if and when the time comes to use them, easily big enough for security items and chain lube

what i didnt like about throw overs , was all the strapping and rubbing on paintwork ... trying to get webbing to protect paintwork etc , wasn't for me .

In all honesty its not something I'm particularly bothered about, the bikes only worth about 2k if it was something more expensive then yeah its something to think about but not when the bike is 17 years old
