applicationcen Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 (edited) I'm looking to make the bike look better for sale & hopefully reduce the rust / oxidisation issues for the future. What can anyone suggest for remedial steps on these two different surfaces? Also any chemical / paint solutions that might help? I had someone come over, seemed very keen and then went off the boil saying the rust was the issue. The bike is a Honda CBF 600. I assume the sump and cylinder is make from aluminium. This appears to have been factory covered in a silver paint. This is flacking off when you rub it. No idea what can be applied here. I assume it might be worth effectively sanding it back & another paint job with an appropriate paint. The handlebars must be chrome covered steel. I've seen an aluminium foil crumpled up and dabbed in water to shift the brown off the chrome. But that's not going to retard it coming back again just as hard. Any help gratefully received Edited May 22, 2021 by applicationcen better description Quote
husoi Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 Rust in chrome is easy, kitchen foil and elbow grease. Aluminium doesn't rust as steel, it creates a sulphate that looks like the anodization is peeling off. You will need to clean it properly, remove the sulphate and apply some aluminium paint to it to replace the anodization. 1 Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted May 23, 2021 Posted May 23, 2021 I'd use Autosol on the chrome. Then give it a wipe with ACF50 to protect it. The handlebars may be pitted by now in which case you'll never stop the corrosion completely. The alloy engine casings I'd use a wire wheel in a Dremel to remove the oxidation. Then paint with a heat proof paint. 2 Quote
fastbob Posted May 23, 2021 Posted May 23, 2021 (edited) A wad of tinfoil to scrub the handlebars . It's not a miracle cure it's just the fact that foil is harder than rust and softer than chrome . For the engine . Remove the scabby parts , take all the paint off with Nitromors * , polish to a high standard then paint with Halfords HT Aluminium Paint . * Not as good as it used to be . The bike has not got a centre stand which makes getting to both sides of the painted block a bit less easy. That engine casing is a bit of a job. Quote

You won't get results without putting a bit of work in . Here's a couple of ER5 engines that I prepared . 1 Quote
