James in Brum Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Hello groovy gang. the other day my bike struggled to start. It did, twenty minutes later I stopped, it started again, I stopped five minutes later for fuel I had to bump start it. I rode it for 30 miles. Next morning it would not start. I can hear the starter motor trying and getting weaker and weaker. my thinking was because it runs fine when started it’s not charging system and likely battery. Is that right? regarding batteries is there a difference between yb12a-a and fb12a-a? is there anything I should know given my sea anemone mechanical skills? Quote
Stu Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 First thing I would be doing is checking the charging system as it could be overcharging and may be killing the battery! A bike will run with a system that overcharges The last thing you want is to replace the battery and then kill it Have you got a multimeter? Quote
TimR Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Re charging checks Look in the circled area behind frame for a large white connection block as prone to conductivity issues Quote
James in Brum Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 Thanks Tim. i can’t remember how long ago I changed the Reg/rev and stator and battery. About 18months I think. Quote
James in Brum Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 The plot thickens. Charger says battery is charged and my multi meter is not working. Quote
James in Brum Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 Should get a new battery for multi meter within the next couple of hours. Quote
Stu Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 You want the multimeter on DC and a range above 12v usually there is one for 20v Post a pic of your multimeter if you're unsure With the battery on the bike check the voltage across the terminals post the result Ignition on lights off check voltage post result Ignition on lights on post result Hit the started while holding the probes on the battery and post the lowest result you see a third hand helps in this process Once running check again and post the result Quote

James in Brum Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 thanks Stu. Got a battery for my multimeter coming. I left it on. I will measure as you describe, wil need to bump start it to get it going to measure with it running. will obviously have to buy a new charger as well Quote

James in Brum Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 Battery on Bench (well kitchen table) 13.3v on bike with wiring connected 13.28 with ignition on with indicator on it just kept dropping, I turned it off at 12.2 With ignition off it looked like battery was recovering. trying to start it the voltage plummeted to 5.7 volts. I did not try it with it started because it has just started to throw it down. Quote

James in Brum Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 I assumed it would need a bump because the battery was showing it was Charged as soon as charger went on. Quote
James in Brum Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 Thanks Stu. I will go get a battery Quote
Stu Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Just now, James in Brum said: Thanks Stu. I will go get a battery You need to still check the charging system as it may have fried the battery 1 Quote
James in Brum Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 Will do. Will come back with measurements once new battery is on. Quote
James in Brum Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 12.9 with wires connected nothing on (new battery) 12.7 with ignition on no engine climbing rapidly with engine on I turned engine of at 15.6v because I thought that was probably too high? Quote
James in Brum Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 Seems to be revs dependent. When Erving at idle ish getting 13.8-14.2 ish Quote
James in Brum Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 Bit of Googling suggests I need a new Reg Rec. Quote
Stu Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 1 hour ago, James in Brum said: Bit of Googling suggests I need a new Reg Rec By the sounds of it you do 15.6v is too high as you have probably figured out which has probably fried the battery and warped a cell which is why the voltage plummets when you hit the starter 1 Quote
James in Brum Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 Thanks Stu. Is it the case when I fit a new one that if the voltage is in the good ranges I’m all sorted? I know how to change it when it gets here. thanks for you help as always 1 Quote
Stu Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Normally yes all is good to go Obviously if the ranges are out there is something wrong the reg/rec's job is to keep them in that range though Quote
