AxT Posted February 9, 2022 Posted February 9, 2022 (edited) I recently bought a "01 Honda Varadero 125 and I decided to replace the pads when I noticed that in the rear the pad that faces out isn't held in properly, so I checked in the service manual and and it is missing a washer/pad retainer that goes on the pin bolt(circled in the picture). I want to know if there is anywhere to buy just this washer because everywhere I look you can only buy the whole caliper bracket and i don't need the entire thing. Maybe there is a similar washer that might fit from a different bike. I appreciate any help. Edited February 9, 2022 by AxT Quote
Bender Posted February 9, 2022 Posted February 9, 2022 Looks more like an anti vibration clip, I may be completely wrong though Quote
iangaryprice Posted February 9, 2022 Posted February 9, 2022 I agree - anti vibration clip. It may not be a seperate part, it look slike it is a press fit on and wouldn't normally be removed. I suspect it has got broken in use or during replacement of the pads. Unfortunatly I think you are goin got have to get a new bracket. Used part may be a cheaper option. Quote
AxT Posted February 9, 2022 Author Posted February 9, 2022 Honestly not sure what its called but when i removed the bracket there was no sign it was there so I'm guessing it's been lost for quite some time. I think I'll see if I can make one from some scrap steel that I got around, didn't really want to mess around with it because not sure of the dimesions but I don't have any plans for this weekend and apparently it's going to rain so I'll see what I can do. Bender Posted February 9, 2022 Posted February 9, 2022 If its not been there for a long time I doubt its that important, anti vibration springs often get discarded. Quote
AxT Posted February 9, 2022 Author Posted February 9, 2022 I do need it because without it the pad can slide down when the brake piston retracts. That is why I wanted to know if there is anywhere you can buy it. Quote
Bender Posted February 9, 2022 Posted February 9, 2022 Why has the pad not slipped out in the past, not doubting you just curious Quote
Bender Posted February 9, 2022 Posted February 9, 2022 Looking at the diagram you have put up the pad is trapped, it has one pin going through it and the other is an open u that sits around the other pin, the bit missing is just an anti rattle device. Quote
AxT Posted February 9, 2022 Author Posted February 9, 2022 Because I rode the bike from may to november and since I used the rear brake the piston held it in place but now its been sitting for the winter and I only pushed it around my garage to move it from one side to another without using the rear brake which pushed the piston enough to allow the pad to slide down on that side, the other side has a pin hanger so it doesn't move there but on this side it is missing this little piece and if I ride the bike it probably won't fall but if it does and I don't notice it means I wouldn't have a fully functioning rear brake and it could wear of just one side of that pad and possibly damage something. I'd rather not take the chance of it doing it when I go riding. Quote
Bender Posted February 9, 2022 Posted February 9, 2022 If the pad is hooked over the pin it can't go any where the bit that's missing on that diagram is simply pushing on the rear of the pad Quote
AxT Posted February 10, 2022 Author Posted February 10, 2022 (edited) The pad with the u shape that attaches to both pins is the inner one, I am talking about the outer pad which just attaches to one pin and slots in the bracket. The piece that is missing is supposed to put pressure on the outer pad so it doesn't move when the piston retracts. I realize I wrote it wrong in the first post where I said it faces out and not that it is the outer one. Edited February 10, 2022 by AxT Quote
Bender Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 Looking at the pic the pad with the u sits on the outer plate the one against the piston is not a u, I cant see how that one locates, would have been easier if they just had 2 pins Quote

One side obviously is mounted on a pin but the other side simply rests in a small recess in the bracket held in place by that missing clip. I doubt the clip is obtainable separately but since it's purpose is to retain the lug on the pad in the recess in the bracket is ought to be easy easy enough to fabricate something that would do the job. It's not taking much load, it's just to stop the pad dropping out of the bracket. 1 Quote

Yeah I'll just try to make one, the whole bracket is around 35-40 € which isn't a lot but the bracket is a piece that doesn't move and therefore doesn't wear out so there is no point in replacing it. The only reason to replace it would be if the bike is in an accident and the bracket gets damaged but mine is good. I also realized that if you're replacing the pin and the nut on which the pad with the u shape attaches you can't get it by itself you have to buy the whole bracket which I don't understand why they did it that way.
