Hi just found and joined group, thanks for the add.

Also got my confirmation of my CBT instructor numbers today.

Looking for advice/guidance.coaching/mentoring from other instructors.

Grateful if you guys could point me at the best sub-forums too please.

Thanks

The best tip I ever got from a moderator when instructing is 'Put yourself in the students position and imagine receiving the comment that you are about to make". This has kept me 'steady and professional' over the years I have been instructing (offshore sailing) and equally applies across all instructional genre.

You could start an 'Instructor' thread if you so wished.

Anyhoo - Welcome!

Gave up my instructors badge probably in excess of 15 years ago, so not much help to you.  Everything is probably different now.  I was also a yellow badge downtrained one, not a Cardington candidate.

However, some advice.

Everyone learns best in different ways.  If you are not getting through to a student, it is not them that are failing to understand you, it is you that are failing to instruct in a way they can understand.  Be flexible in the ways you impart your knowledge.  If something is not working, change tack.

Explain this to your student.  It WILL put them at ease.

Also, do not be afraid to tear up the progress you have made and go back to basics.  If your student has reached a plateau point, it can break him out of it.  It is far better than to continue pushing down a blind alley.

As an instance.  If the student is not doing well on the u turn, take him back to the figure 8 and gradually make it tighter and tighter, slower and slower and introduce lifesaver checks.

Never, ever show exasperation in your demeanor or comments.  It will only make things worse.

If you have a mixed group, experience wise as you will find out in the clothing talk, make it clear to them that the least experienced one wil not be expected to progress as fast as the others and it is ok.

All this is designed to take the pressure off the student.  It is a very nerve wracking experience for them.

Finally. There is no time limit...

There's a thread of trainees experiences, worth looking at to see what students dealt with, particularly the less positive experiences.

Guys thanks for taking the time to answer.

I was trying to keep the post light on detail (about me) and ideally i am looking for other current instructors to chat with.  I have instructed for many years on many subjects so the planning and delivery of lessons to people with varying ability and mobility etc is normal to me.

It was some of the specifics on current practice, Cardington prep, resources, etc that i was hoping to start discussing.

Thanks again though, some great responses

I've taught a bit (not motorcycles). I think the fact you're interested in finding out, discussing current practice and looking for advice and guidance, suggests to me there's a very good chance you'll be a good instructor. It's the people who think they know it all who tend to be problematic.

Best of luck with it and update how you get on. There's always a stream of students on here who would benefit from the guidance of a real world instructor.

Good idea Goat, i've seen other people running their CBT/licence journey type messages so there may be an audience to help rather than just seek support myself - i like that idea mate.  In a rare act of humility i hadn't thought anyone would be interested in what i was doing 😂😂😂
