Mickly Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 I want to download a route from Google Maps to my newly acquired old Garmin, I've found several Youtube videos on how to do this which seem clear and unambiguous, however ...... in creating a route in Google 'my maps' I cannot find the 'avoid motorways option', (I can find it in Google Maps), is it hidden somewhere or is it just not available and you have to fiddle round with the route it gives you, it's driving me loopy !! Basecamp .. which is what i use to plot / plan routes has a function to allow this .. however once the route is loaded onto the nav. unit it calculates using its own programmed settings .. so assuming the sequence is the same ... boot unit up.. go into settings.... then into Avoidances ... there find motorways and tick the box .. any pre-loaded routes will then require a recalculation for them to adhere to your preferences .. bring up route and check it has routed as you require... got that ? 1 Quote
Mickly Posted July 8, 2023 Author Posted July 8, 2023 (edited) Thanks, I’ve got Basecamp but find it a bit clunky, which is why I’m trying to import a map created in Google Maps I take it that Basecamp won’t recalculate the route using its own algorithm & stick to the original, just without Motorways? Gerontious Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 Ive never used my maps. as far as I can tell its an unnecessary complication. create a route on normal google maps. then once you are happy with it. go to this page. https://mapstogpx.com paste the link from the created route which might look like this: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/52.9803745,-1.1312242/CANNOCK+CHASE+GERMAN+MILITARY…/@52.7860783,-2.1590124,9.11z/data=!4m26!4m25!1m15!3m4!1m2!1d-1.5268618!2d52.8560031!3s0x4879f9e7a46872bd:0x5186e4c318e74680!3m4!1m2!1d-1.6786866!2d52.8527749!3s0x487a03382639acd3:0xbc6b9ed6ab0322a9!3m4!1m2!1d-1.8369623!2d52.8182575!3s0x487a0fa121402bdd:0x62d710b469ec62e!1m5!1m1!1s0x487a74c32ea11957:0x552b6e589a5ba230!2m2!1d-2.0219759!2d52.7394494!2m1!1b1!3e0?entry=ttu press "Lets go" and it will create a GPX and send it to downloads. like this: you can then either open this using basecamp and convert it to a route. or perhaps use the unit itself. most can do this, my 660 could and so can my current XT. just be sure the settings match... so if you are avoiding motorways, be sure the Garmin and/or basecamp is too. If I do this.. convert the route using basecamp. I get the exact same route. Google maps. and a route created by converting the GPX by the unit itself. ready to go. easier to do than explain on a forum. 1 Quote

Gerontious Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 I find normal google maps much easier to use. you can set up the avoidances. then create a simple A to B route.. and then move it. so, for my example I use the main roads to begin with, then pushed it off the A50 and went through smaller villages towards cannock chase. I could easily have zoomed in further and refined the route much more. so simple to do with normal google maps. I tried 'my maps' once and didn't click with it. I don't ever save routes, once Ive used them I delete and next time create something a bit different. or even take a look using street view. do I really want to use that road? yes/no. 1 Quote

Copycat73 Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 PS. one of Basecamps more endearing qualities is its ability to store an inordinate quantity of information .. allowing quick and accurate access ... last count .. over 12000 way points .. 850 routes .. 600 tracks .. why after spending time to be discarded when they can be recycled .. rehashed .. and reused .. 1 Quote
Stu Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 I find it much easier to create an account at https://www.myrouteapp.com/ Create your routes there then send them straight to the 590 Its free to use and you can subscribe if you really want which gives acccess to a few extra tools and different maps Sadly you won't be able to send routes via bluetooth from your phone like you can with the zumo XT so you would be stuck with a cable and a PC connection but you would have to do that anyway 1 Quote

Mickly Posted July 11, 2023 Author Posted July 11, 2023 @Stu, I remembered that @Hoggs had created a GPX file of this years tags, so I've managed to upload that into MyRoute, very useful, ta. BTW how do you mark a post with 'Solution Found' ? Quote
Stu Posted July 11, 2023 Posted July 11, 2023 @Mickly It was me that created the Tags GPX and just added it to the post To do that you need GPX loader from Garmin which is pretty easy to use to for the future It's only mods and admin that can mark as solution and only in pitstop at the min maybe I should enable it in other forums to for these reasons 1 Quote
