My 12 year old Toshiba laptop is surprisingly not compatible with Windows 11.  🤨

I can get W11 to run on it but since everything I have is set to English (United Kingdom) which isn't supported by W11 I'd lose a load of stuff updating the os. Shame really as I fitted extra RAM and a SSD to it and it still flies in terms of what I need it for - basic word processing, emails and the joys of online meetings.

I'm looking at Asus Zenbooks but apart from the entry level one with 8GB RAM they are all OLED screens. I tend to keep things for years and from what I've read OLEDs don't last that long.

Has anyone had one long term and how did it go?

I have a Fujitsu since 2011

Since last update is slower than a snail.

You can get all that with a android tablet 🙂

If you need to use a mouse and keyboard there are plenty of choices for Bluetooth ones.

I got a teclast T50 and it's really good.

This Lenovo G50 laptop has had the message of doom from windows so in the same boat.

I do use an android tablet and one of the things I miss is the keyboard and mouse. I never even considered a bluetooth option. So thanks I have learnt something today!

I have a tablet and bluetooth keyboard / mouse - but that doesn't cover everything I need.

I currently use a desk pc for most work and a laptop for presentations / training events / meetings. All being well I hope retire in 2026 which means moving house into something smaller where I won't have an office. Hence whilst I need to update my hardware I'm looking at a decent spec laptop which is more portable and doesn't need dedicated desk space. It needs to last me at least 5 years - I'd prefer a LED screen but the spec of laptop I want is only available with an OLED screen. I'm after a 16:10 screen as I do a lot of writing. Asus do a Zenbook with a LED screen but that's 8GB RAM. I'd prefer 16Gb to make it a bit more future proof - but those only come with OLEDs.

I guess there’s a reason Apple never used an OLED screen on any of their MacBooks. And it has nothing to do with cost, which has never been a factor especially for their top of the line MacBook Pro. The failure rate in production. ie the number of screens that fail to meet the specs in final QC before shipping to the final manufacturer is huge 60-70% though I don’t know if that little nugget has any bearing on long term reliability, there are rumours of OLED screens arriving on MacBooks in 2026, but it’s been a constant rumour since they first appeared. Apple has consistently said no thanks. And there has to be a reason for this. I’m betting it’s reliability.

i can’t say anything about any windows laptop as I wouldn’t buy one and have no need of a MacBook either. But if for some bizarre reason I did… well that’s a hypothetical I don’t need to waste much time over.

@Gerontious that's a good point!

The fact that Asus have a video outlining steps to avoid OLED degradation and software to alleviate the effects of long term use make me suspicious.

My LED monitor is ancient and still faultless.

I could be wrong, but I'm sure I read....

LG invented and manufacture all OLED screens.

Samsung tried something similar (QLED).

I would think Apple not only want reliability, but they wouldn't want to climb into bed with LG. I can't imagine the demand for screens to Apple could even be met.

Just an edumacated guess really.
