Afternoon good folks of the two wheeled variety!

Question, i have a couple of apple air tags and a samsung smart tag, the batteries on them last trillion of years, are they any good for being hidden on a motorbike to track it?  I ask because i have them already which means they are basically free. lol

• Apple AirTags
While in no way a monitored system, Apple AirTags are interesting as they’re located by Apple devices nearby, and there’s a good chance at least one of the thieves will have a newish iPhone. You’ll struggle to set one up if you have an Android device,

the battery lasts about a year if you dont use it, problem is also the range and the need for other iPhones or a form of network nearby.

so securing one without it disappearing months down the line while on a ride might be a challenge.

also this might be a double edged sword, but the main flaw is that nearby ones can be located easily, so checking for it on a bike is quick and easy, even with an Android phone thanks to Apple’s Tracer Detect app.if they hang another one with it it will tell them if there is an air tag there…then they know what to look for…

If it was cheap set up, look at monimoto.

It's a good idea to remove the built in speaker from the tag before hiding it your bike as they have what in other circumstance is a useful 'anti stalking' chirp facility, in our circumstances the chirp would guide the scrotes to the tag location. It's fiddly but quite easy to do.

Airtag - Remove Speaker

I also bought waterfroof self adhesive rubber holders to mount mine.

Similar to these. Airtag - Rubber Holder

Lastly from the various real world tests I've read / videos watched, don't expect great things from an Airtag / Smart Tag as a tracker. That didn't stop me putting one on my bike (two actually, one easily found, one well buried) as like you I already had them, but I treat it as a 'well it's got to help' rather than something I'll be relying on.

I've hidden one away on my bike.  Easy to hide, even when inside a waterproof holder.  I would definitely do what @Capt Sisko recommends, removing the speaker.  I found  it a bit fiddly to do, but worth the effort.  At the end of the day it's fairly cheap, and may just help get the bike back.  Monimoto is also a good option, the latest version is a lot easier to conceal on the bike.

I have heard of a few people having them hidden on their bikes after visiting local bike venues. My mates had a couple put on his R1, so won't go to Whiteway's again.

If the thieves can track your bike home. Hopefully you can do the same if it goes missing.

problem with airtags is that you get a notification on your phone to say there's an unknown airtag travelling with you, so when the thieves nick your bike and take it away, they get a message to let them know there's an airtag following them...

They will alert an apple device if it's near it too long and you can DL an app for android to see if an apple airtag is near you.....so they are pretty easy to find.

I thought the issue with Apple airtags was updated. I understand weirdos were following women as they shared location without knowing. This can now be switched off?
