Oil from breather hose?

Parked up at 08:30. Went out at 13:00 to check on the bike to find drips of oil or oily water from the breather hose.

Is this anything to be concerned about? Is it to do with the hot weather?

The oil level is at the top of the two lines.

Valve service done a few thousand miles ago.

Come to think of it, the oil is not that high.. Maybe something to keep an eye on. Haven't noticed it losing power and can't see any smoke.

It's more than likely coming from the air box 

 

The crank case breather goes into the air box then will drain out to that pipe

 

Pretty normal and with higher mileage you will get more pressure in the crank case which will push a bit more oil out 

 

Might be worth stripping and cleaning the air box

As @Stu wisely say.

Higher mileage will mean more compression escaping from piston beads into the air box or the crankcase.

If it's just a little then I would ignore it while keeping an eye on oil level.

For the look of the oil it had a service recently and it could be just some of the old oil draining.

 

Long term solution, and I wouldn't recommend unless really necessary, is to check compression on pistons, eventually change the compression rings.

My shadow was dripping oil from the clutch cover for a very long time without making a difference on oil level.

Keep in mind that you will need a lot of oil drops for the oil to go down 1mm

Yes a little bit is ok, especially when it seems to do it after a stop for a while. If there is lots and all the time then that’s not good.

check the inside of the air box and filter, if there is very slight misting/fine coat then ok but keep an eye on it. Also now keep an eye on the engine oil level and its condition, that can give clues too.
Just double check the engine spec of if its a dry sump or not, you need to check the level differently depending on which.

also to note has the engine oil put in is spec  different? That can change the behaviour and what comes out, some engines and oils like to burn and mist a bit while others don’t.

Clearing crap out of the breather hose is a standard service item on my CBF. For some reason the hose is plugged so between services it collects a small amount of crud. 

 

It's usually oily water from the airbox so my guess is that the hot weather has simply allowed some accumulated crap to be vented. If you're worried leave a small container under the hose when you park the bike. The mark shown would be caused by a very small amount of liquid.

Yeah found some have plugs (cbf and gsf) and Some don’t (zx6r,benelli,Daytona).
honest they are there for a reason (breathing and pumping) because you can’t put it out in the atmosphere or the ground directly anymore and very new bikes have carbon canister. A little bit of water (moisture build up) is fine but a lot of either is not.
if you notice more than a few drops (if your a old British bike or ktm owner it needs to more than a weep) half or more than espresso cup worth often after a stop needs investigation.

I've been checking and it doesn't seem to have done it since. Maybe just the hot weather. Cleaning out the air box is a tank off jobbie. One for a rainy Saturday.
