I'm still trying to work out how much is enough, and what is too much. Seems I either put too little on, and in a few days the chain is dry. Or I put too much on and it ends up flung everywhere. Argh!!

Thanks. Am booked on a bikesafe course in July now, and will look at the advanced options after that.

I started with a bikesafe. Differing opinions as to their worthiness and despite many views about them being a waste of time I found it quite useful. Biggest thing I learnt was that the motorcycle cops are bikers who just happen to be coppers!

Made me want to look at advanced ... you'll enjoy it.

Hah! It's my cornering that still lets me down for anything like that, but I'm happy with my slow and steady progress towards competence.

 

As long as you're getting round them that's the main thing! Also don't try and go nuts straight away, working on your lines will bring a gradual natural speed increase. I'm not that rapid round them just try and be smooth and as long as I come out the other side class it as a win

I agree entirely - want a bit of tuition soon on lines, as I'm not wholly sure what I'm meant to be aiming for!

Going to check out a few videos on YouTube over the weekend, so let me know if there's any particularly good ones for road riding (other than Twist of the Wrist, which I may try to endure again).

I definitely see faster cornering as being a result of riding well, rather than being the main objective in and of itself. Which isn't to say I don't enjoy it, I just want to stick within my novice limits!

Go along to your local advanced motorcycle club. They will give you an assessment ride - no committment required - and will cost you nothing but time and fuel. You will gain a lot from an hours ride with them.

Anyway, the crash in some ways did me a favour and some good came from it other than my disability. I always hated shaving and.....I got a new Police bike out of it as my old bike broke in 2 and exploded

Just looked up on the royal mail website and had confirmation that my court plea and supporting evidence has been received and signed for at the Bath County Court by a Harry Law!

Had to laugh.

Done all that Baloo ... just wondering if anyone knows how long they take once they get the letter of explanation.

 

About a fortnight is the norm.

If no reply received by lets say the 14th of April, then call them and explain that you are awaiting a response, you have not heard anything and you are looking at going on holiday were you will need your licence and time is becoming "of the escence" or something along those lines.

It may be a little white porky, but who is to say that you are not going away and that you don't need your licence and as a lay person, you don't know how these things work, so it will give them a gee up.

No mate ... aparently my licence didn't arrive at the place it should have done for the endorsements.

Explain that you have already pleaded guilty to the speeding offence by going online and paying the fine, so that is already dealt with.

Plead not guilty of failing to supply your details and say you posted everything, it's up to them to prove you didn't.

10 working days after your jail sentence ...so technically you are looking at around 4 years

Never been challenged at our local Shell garage........I fact, when I went to pay on Sunday on the way out on the bikes I noticed a sign by the door that said to either remove your helmet or open the visor......much more sensible......

Going back to Joeman's post.....my eldest son works in a filling station at a local supermarket and he says that they get told to enforce this kind of thing occasionally. ......he's not going to risk his job by not complying with his manager's instructions. ......so, please bear this in mind before ranting off at the staff in the filling station.....

I know they are only doing their job ... it is the ludicrousy of having to remove the helmet but allowing the face to still be fully covered by snook or other item of clothing.

taking your helmet off takes time... but standing at the pump whilst you munch your pasty, crisps and drink, check your social media, answer a few threads on TMBF, before eventually putting your helmet and gloves back on and finally riding away can take even more time...

Not to mention pissing off the people waiting to use the pump ...

... My gob has officially been smacked!

I used a garage that I don't usually use this morning to fill up. They muttered something through the intercom which I didn't understand so an attendant came out and told me to remove my helmet BEFORE they would authorise the pump. Frustrated (old argument I know) but I did and left my full face snood on. Eyes visible through letterbox!

They authorised pump, I filled up and went in to pay with helmet in hand and snood still fully covering my face except my eyes.

'What was that all about?' I asked

'It's the rules', the spotty guy said.

'What about this then?, pointing at snood

'The boss said nothing about hats!'

Hmmm!

Does that sound ok? Or a bit bolshy?

 

That sounds perfectly reasonable

Just explain exactly what happened and send photocopies of any correspondence or paperwork you have (Don't send originals) and see what they say

You still have the options as mentioned previously.

Remember, you only have to put reasonable doubt into the mind of the Magistrates. You do not have to convince a jury of 12, just 3 lay people (or 1 stipend depending on the area) and it is for the prosecution to prove beyond all reasonable doubt that you are guilty of an offence.

The fact that you are prepared to plead guilty on what is by and large a reasonably minor offence, starts to create an aura of doubt.

So I am thinking, plead not guilty giving reasons as I already accepted guilt by paying fine and returning licence which they claim has not been received and quote the 'acceptance is complete as soon as the letter is posted. Even if the letter was mislaid or lost and does not reach the offeror'.

Admit that my only failing was not to chase up the non-return of my licence. (I have checked online and apparantly I am still showing as zero penalty points on my licence which would suggest that they didn't receive it.)

I am happy to take the points for my transgression and pay the fine, which I already have, but not happy about being prosecuted for not doing something I believe I have already done.

Does that sound ok? Or a bit bolshy?

You have the documentary evidence to prove that you admitted the offence, paid the fine and submitted your licence for endorsment.

If they fail to discontinue the action, then get professional legal assistance. I can put you in touch with someone if you have nobody available yourself.

This could be expensive which I can ill afford!

Ok guys I need some advice.

On 26/09/2016 I got flashed doing 69mph on the M5 in a 60mph variable speed limit zone. I admit the offence and went online and paid my fine and then filled in the little form and sent my licence to DVLA.

I pretty much forgot all about it untill I needed my licence early this year and realised that I hadn't received it back so I went online again and requested a replacemenet which I received ages ago.

Today I have received a court summons for the speeding offence and failure to inform of the identity of the driver.

My bank statement confirms that I paid which surely is admission of guilt but I can't prove that I sent my licence off because I didn't get a receipt.

How do I preceed with the court. Do I plead guilty? I've paid and sent off licence just didn't check up when it didn't return or do I plead not guilty and risk a massive fine which I can ill afford since I am soon to be unemployed?

I asked the question because my Father recently passed away, last Saturday actually, and while I was visiting the hospice an old lady sat sipping tea in a room next to his smiled at me as I passed. I smiled back and she caught me off guard saying 'can you see me?'

I smiled again and rather confusingly replied with, 'Sorry!'

She laughed and said, 'That got you, didn't it?' (according to the nurses she was a bit of a joker)

Although the dear old soul was joking it reminded me off the time my Uncle spoke to my grandmother AFTER she had passed away Story earlier about Grandmother saying goodmorning to him. I wonderred what other stories others had. It would be very interesting to see if there is some sort of explanation for all of them! Interesting for me any way.

I have received quite a few stories from several sources and some I want to follow up. I may be messaging some of you at some point.

Unusual in what way?

We (the family) let out a collective cheer when my grandfather karked it. Don't know how unusual that actually is.

Not exactly what I was thinking Mr Fro. lol

Example: When my uncle was about 18 he used to live with us. One morning he woke up and came down stairs and asked what mum (his mother) was doing here. Apparantly, his mother came out of the bathroom and said good morning to him. About an hour or so later the police arriced and informed us that she had passed away the night before.

I need your help. I am doing a research project into unusual or strange eperiences surrounding death. If you have experienced anything unusual before, during or after the event and you are happy to talk to me about it please PM me. Doesn't matter who the deceased was. I am only interested in the unusual events surrounding the passing.

I am looking for anything that is not considered 'normal'.
