  1. "Obviously" when said in a certain patronising tone as part of an answer to a question. If it was bloody obvious I wouldn't have asked the question would I?

Also the phrase "at this moment in time" so beloved of politicians. In fact if I think about it every word uttered by any politician is usually over used, distorted and seems to be the exact opposite of the dictionary definition.

  2. I'm with MCE at the moment but have not made a claim (hopefully won't) and they were cheaper for me last year as a born again biker. They were half the price of Bikesure. I'll be interested to see what there renewal quote comes in at.

  3. Does anyone have an ALMAX chain, if so what do you think? I'm considering the Almax immobiliser series 3 with the SS65CS lock, will be using it at home and taking it with me in a pannier when I go away, 2m weighs about 8kg

That's what I have. Seem to work well but I don't live in an area overrun with bike thieves. It is heavy and gives a secure feel. I guess it's as good as any and better than some.

  4. Filtering on the inside? No, no, and no again. You leave yourself nowhere to go plus in addition to cars you leave yourself open to pedestrians wandering into the road. A car turning into a junction will have difficulty seeing you and if other traffic has stopped to let him across he's going to assume it's clear to go. I think you'll be lucky to get 50:50.

  5. You do know that eating smoked food increases the risk of cancer don’t you.

According to the [strikeout]nanny state[/strikeout]science just about everything that is nice to eat or drink is a cause of increased risk of some dreadful disease. So as we all have to die of something we may as well crack on and enjoy ourselves. I'm surely not giving up smoked ham or bacon.

    Fixed it

The trouble with science is that for every theory there is a counter theory. Remember butter was supposed to be bad for you but now it's supposed to be good? So like many people I just ignore it. I've made it to past 60 so something will get me sooner rather than later. Hey ho.

  6. Me. My father in law dropped part of the fire set into the log burner so I got up early to try to find it amongst the ashes.

I scooped out the bulk of the ash, of which there was loads as the fire had been lit most of the day. Then I decided to use my old workshop hoover to clear the debris and ash that was left.

Which would have been great if I hadn't knocked the filter connection out of line. So when the fire place was lovely and clean I turned round to see the rest of the room had disappeared in a fog of fine ash dust. You would not believe how far ash dust can travel round a house!

And the bit he dropped into the fire seems to have melted

Oooh, I bet that caused some marital friction. I'd have been on the naughty step for months. I still get grief for dropping a can of paint on a new carpet - 34 years ago!

  8. Fuel economy/efficiency has to take into weight, rotating mass, gearing etc etc and even then you can have it tuned to run rich or lean depending on what market or task it's been aimed at and it all has an effect on the other, as engines get bigger power increase but rpm drops due to mass and physics, take it to the silly degree go look at ship engines, huge power with very little rpm ie 10' of thousands if hp at a couple hundred rpm

Slow speed MAN 6S70ME-C diesel: 21,000 HP at 82 RPM. Top speed about 15 knots (17 mph). Pushing about 180,000 tonnes. Fuel consumption of 55 tonnes per 24 hours.

  9. There is racing way of riding, breaking into the corner accelarating soon as you can out, leaning into the bend

Then there is normal way of riding.....

That IS the normal way of riding. Okay you don't need to get your knee down or scrape your pegs but slow on entry and accelerate out of the bend once you can see the exit is the way to go. And yes the bike will lean and so will you. Suggest you try riding a bike before telling us how it's done.

  10. The guy in his pretend Porsche Boxer (Peugeot ) 55mph in the righthand lane of the M6 near Walsall......yes, the smart motorway signs were set to 60mph, but that doesn't mean that you can just sit there blocking everyone else......got the right hump when I went past him in lane 2.....only after sitting behind him for a couple of miles and it was obvious he wasn't gonna move over.....

Biggest cause of road rage for me is the prat who sits in either lane 2 or 3 at just below the speed limit when the lanes inside of them are empty. Then gets all upset if someone has the temerity to undertake them. Seems to be getting worse as well with all these managed motorways.

  11. ...To be fair 4WD is pretty good for being able to get moving or get up hills etc in snow, but it’s not going to help you stop again!, I think that’s what a lot of people seem to overlook!.

    ...

Only if they are fitted with all season or winter tyres (tires)

One enraging thing - why in the UK nearly all tyres supplied as standard on cars are basically summer tyres?

If I visit my brother in Germany under German law my tyres are illegal in winter so I have been trying for years to get all season tyres which only recently have started to become available. I don't want winter tyres as it means a full set of wheels and then having to store them.
