From my own personal experience when i was getting kitted out, i went to J&S and the staff were extremely knowledgeable and helpful, i would definately opt for a new helmet, but no harm in trying on the clothing to see what fits and how comfortable you feel, also sizes vary between manufacturers which will also help if buying second hand as you will know which are a bit more generous in the fit, but go to a shop and try them out and there is no pressure to buy, i was in and out several times trying on stuff before i bought

have you looked and checked the frame number on the bike itself, if its difficult to read rub some grime on it then get a piece of tape sellotape or masking tape will do, put it over the number and rub your thumb or finger over the top then take it off and transfer it to some paper then you can compare it to the v5, having a broken lock sets the alarm bells ringing that something isn't right

HPI doesn't mean jack, if someone trashed it but not gone through insurance if they had any, and went and nicked one identical and just swapped reg plates wouldn't show on an HPI report

Could be from an attempted theft or stolen recovered which has be repaired to a degree to get it sold, did you check the history as it could also be a ringer, do the engine and frame numbers match the v5
