  2. Thanks, I copped some snow leaving Tyndrum. Now making up for that disappointment by doing all the pubs today and tomorrow - or am I tempting fate again TC -score and photos changed to reflect I have managed to do a Royal Oak twice

  4. It is why I always take a map with me.
  5. that really sucks, how did you make it back? The recovery I got with my insurance, Green Flag, but it was a company from Spean Bridge with a van marked specialist motorbike recovery. There was the usual pish explaining where I was me - the car park at the tourist info at Fort Augustus them - have you got a post code? what is the name of the road you are at? me - no and it is the A82 them - it will be far quicker if you give me a post code and what was that road name again? The ayeate...what? me - the A82, as in Alpha eight two. Are you using a local contractor? them - yes at Spean Bridge me - fine they will know exactly where I am them - it will still be quicker with a post code me - no it will not etc etc and she won over the post code as I went to tourist info to find out what there one was. I still had to wait an hour and 3/4.
  6. A borders trip is later this month and the far north part two will be the second half of July.
  7. B for me. The CBT is so comprehensive compared to what passed for a test years ago it felt safe to go out on a 125cc after completing it. The DAS then came at a leisurley pace with a lesson a month or so and then the Mod 1 and 2 came after 6 months. That also helped spread the cost and meantime the YBR125 I had lost three hundred pounds in value before I traded it in for a bigger bike.
  8. A nail through the back tyre at Fort Augustus. No dealers open today or tomorrow with the bank holiday so the whole trip has been written off. I am back home absolutely gutted. Where do these nails come from? That is two punctures in the space of 3 months.
  9. Bike ready, kit ready, so tomorrow Ullapool, Monday John O'Groats, Tuesday Culloden and Wednesday some pubs on the way home. This trip will involve camping rather than B&Bs. The forecast is not great The pubs are proving to be quite a challenge. The Kings Head involved going abroad and I can only find one Rose & Crown in Scotland, in Edinburgh in a pedestrianised road
  10. Ride recommended and they have never leaked with me http://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcy ... prod/15950
  11. I know you are all right in what you say, so the Schuberth J1 with its chin bar is now going to be saved for (£250). It is the sensible compromise.
  12. I feel claustraphobic in a full face helmet and the chin bar blocks my view of the controls so I have to move my head down rather than just glance down.
  13. I started with Bike It is Paisley and then switched because of their crappy GS500s to Ride On who were using new XJ6s which were far more comfortable and reliable. Your fails sound like bad luck.
  14. Hi and welcome to the forum. I passed on my second attempt at the Mod 2. I had not spotted the 20mph past Renfrew High was only when the lights flash but the one a couple of hundred yards on past Arkleston Primary was 20mph all the time. What did you fail on? It should not matter what you do right or wrong, one is a pass and the other is a fail.
  15. Ed, there are few modular helmets which I have tried and with the chin bar in place they may as well be full faced. I like the Schuberth J1, but it has a visor. I prefer riding with my safety glasses. Yes Techno, I saw a helmet that appears to fit the bill on the internet. Now I am considering what to do about it by consulting you chaps and then finding one to try. Colin, I am looking for a way to minimise the damage whilst getting a better view out of the helmet and and my accident where I did head face first to the tarmac the natural reaction is to cover your face and it was my hand and arm that took the impact.
  16. I really fancy an open faced helmet, but want something to help protect my chin. I do not want a face visor either. So far the best I have found is this helmet, the Lazer Twist with its leather skirt going most of the way round the chin. http://www.scootercrazy.com/acatalog/lazer-twist-black-metal.jpg Is there anything that has a chin guard as you find on police or army helmets where the chin is covered like this? http://www.gray-nicolls.co.uk/UserFiles/images/products/large/chin%20strap.png
  17. Glad to hear it is going well in time for the better weather.
  18. Did you manage all of the tags?
  19. The Royal Oak in Largs http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7193/7091030919_0667153a40_c.jpg
  20. I wear it more like a normal neck tube, I dont like stuff over my mouth and nose. The elastic keeps in place round my chin and all the material bunched up keeps my neck lovely and warm and blocks draughts into the helmet.
  21. Cold my arse! That is tepid to mild compared to this........ http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7145/6801470941_9d4eabe9e7_b.jpg
  22. How was the trip Ullapool to Wick? I am now booked in to do the far north next month. Did you see any haggis running about when you were out in the moors?
  23. Bought Nov 2011 from J&S in Hamilton for about £65 in a sale. http://shop.hostettler.de/SupplyImages/WF015/L_X41001-003.jpg GOOD Everything, seriously! Fit, finish, comfort, price, waterproofness, armour. They are less bulky that my first attempt at winter gloves, but still warmer than them. I have had two hands first onto rocks/tarmac with these gloves with no damage to them at all. BAD Nothing. NOTE I have ended up with a medium sized pair. At the time of trying them on I found all other glove makers has me as a large or even XL with Alpinestars. So the Swiss (IXS is a Swiss company) must have massive hands!
  24. I got the Maxi Tube http://store.planet-knox.com/uploads/20090520104005724689_normal.jpg mainly to keep the chill off my chest. It works very well, I just wish it was bigger so as to cover my large manly chest........
