Flooding sounds likely - flames and smoke probably excess unburned fuel. When you picked it up it's probable that it had already been run to warm it up but it's going to need the choke to start it from cold. There's also an acquired technique for kicking over engines! From a thread about starting KLR 600's (apparently they can be a bit reluctant in the cold) ....... 'Kick slowly till you feel resistance, then gently push thru the resistance, then return the kicker all the way to the top. Then with a smooth, swift motion, kick down. No need to go crazy. If it doesn't work, try it again.
