cbr 600 jellymould

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

I bought a 1989 cbr 600 for £200 as it needs some love to get it working. its complete and the paint works not to bad, the plastics need some work in places but i guess that to be expected.

It had been parked up outside for 5/6 years.

This is how it looked when i bought it ( sorry its not a great shot, its the only one i have)

I'd taken the plastics off as i planed to get it running today only i've noticed a small problem with the exhaust, its rusted away a little were the 4-2-1 bit is

I wanted to make sure the brakes were in good shape so i removed them from the bike to take a look but I must say they were in surprisingly good shape considering its been left parked outside for so long

The carbs are not to bad either, i dont know if the guy drained them first or anything but they were dry inside and did not take to much cleaning :)

It came time to paint the wheels.

I have a rear paddock stand so taking the rear wheel off was easy. Then i thought "how am i going to get the front off, then i had an idea, i have an engine crane lol.

I used it to hold the bike while i got the wheel off then i lowered the front onto a block of wood as i did not want it hanging on the crane :)

The back wheel painted and lacquered, The disc needs painting up too but i did not have any black paint at the time so i just put it back on to see how it looked. I'm quite pleased how it came out in the end.

This is how it looked just before Christmas.

I'd got it out of the garage, first time it had seen daylight since i had it lol.

Just need to sort the small damage to the faring.

And finally this is how it looks now :)

I still need to paint the end can but i put all the plastics back, their not perfect but i thought its cleaned up quite well for an old girl

Cheers both.

As for the exhaust i did plan on welding in a new pipework but then managed to buy a complete standard system for £80 so bought that instead :)

Very nice work - good to see her back to former glory. Love this colour scheme - almost bought a brand-new one 'back in the day'.

A friend of mine has one exactly the same, just not in quite as nice condition.

Hope you enjoy her :-)

The first generation of my bike, and the fact they still keep going from the 80's when mine is an 07 gives me hope!

Looks lovely, ive seen your work and Ive enjoyed seeing what youve done. Ive been doing a lot of this for friends lately, getting old heaps into a good state for the road. A massive sense of satisfaction when you get an old bike running as smooth and easily as a newer one :thumb:

Changed the screen today for a bubble screen

The screen is for an f2 cbr so it needed cutting to fit.

AS you can see it does not fit as flush as the standard screen as it does not have the mould on the edge but its not to bad a fit

It passed :thumb:

He did mention the rear brake and said its almost an advisery and i should get a new one for next time but i'm well happy its on the road.

It rode well too, the brakes did take a few miles to bed the new pads in but were fine after that. Going to take it for a run the week end

Nice one Mintex....glad it passed OK. Can't the rear brake be rebuilt?.....or is it the Disk that's going?

Cheers bud.

The calipers ok it just needs a new disc. I did think about getting one when i put new pads in but just never did, bit silly of me really.

Quick question, where do you find these bikes so cheap?

Any tips for someone like me looking to start multiple projects?

I would have loved to have done a proper job on one of these. And you seem to have an eagle eye for finding them looking at this and the old ER :thumb:

I know were there is a cbr 600 like mine for sale but that one is up for £600. I've not seen it but from what i under stand its a runner and has mot but needs an overhaul. I also know were there is a major project, its a kawasaki gpx 600, its been parked up for about 12 years, maybe more  but its spend around the last 5 outside, i'm not sure how much or if its even for sale as i've not asked :?:

Nice job you did there mate. :) good to see the old girl looking good again.

My first big bike was one of those in black & red (1989 model) I loved it, thought it was awesome.

Wish I had the skills and no-how to restore something like that.
