Hi guys. I have a flip front helmet that is too big to go into my box. I normally carry this into work but with the weather looking a tad better I am using my wheels to get out to more places and am going to need some way to secure my helmet.

I have seen some types of special locks for helmets and jackets which look ok. I get that these are more like deterrents than preventative measures as a pair of pliers would render most of them pointless but I was wondering how many of you use helmet locks or something similar? Also have any of you had your stuff stolen / tampered with? I am not intending on leaving my jacket on the bike or anything, just the helmet. I have considered getting a bigger box but to be honest the one on it is pretty big already I just had the bad luck to buy a fat ass helmet before I got the bike, if I got any bigger box it would be a bit of an issue filtering and so on (or it feels that way for me at any rate).

Cheers

I can't see any top box affecting filtering, mine will take 2 helmets.

Just use the helmet lock on the bike, 2nd hand helmets are pretty much worthless, even more so if they cut the strap to get it off the bike. I've never lost a lid or heard of anyone who has.

When i'm out of the UK and parked up having a wander, I usually leave it on the bars and so far not lost one, I wouldn't leave it loose in the UK because of the chance of someone wandering off with it 'for a laugh'

Flip lids are bigger than full face and are a tight squeeze into boxes. If you don't want to carry your lid, get a smaller full face helmet and use the box.

never had a problem filtering with a top box.

if I hit mirrors on cars it's always been with the handlebars.

normally have a 40 litre top box on the bike.

so a larger top box shouldn't be a problem.

if needed I would fit a large one quite happily.

a mate has I think it is a 58 litre Givi box on and doesn't have any problems with filtering.

as above, a helmet without the straps are useless to everyone. I used to leave my helmet locked on my bike (with the lock on the bike, designed to lock onto the D-rings) all the time with no ill effect (unless it rained). I don't anymore as my current bike does not have a helmet lock. I'm going to have to look into a way of fabricating one onto the bike soon though as I'm going to be going to a few bike events over the summer.

If your pic relates to your bike, it has a helmet hook under the pillion seat, same as gsxr, pan euro and i imagine many other bikes.

Cheers. Maybe I should look at a bigger box. My 'bike' is actually a 125 scooter and I don't want it to look stupid with a huge top box. I think I'm gonna just get a cable lock and attach it to the passenger handles. I wasn't bothered about leaving it at all but I did a quick google search and found a load of stories about people getting helmets pissed on and stuff like that. I must have just got the extreme cases.

Im loving having a flip front helmet but I think in future im gonna get a full face so I can store it on the bike.

If it's a scooter, is there no storage space under the seat? I know a lot of scooters are designed with the commuter in mind so they try and cater for lids etc under the seat

What's wrong with using a bit of chain and a padlock round something on the bike with the padlock through the D-ring?

Oh it has storage under the seat but I bought my helmet before I got it and at the time it hadn't even occurred to me that there would be such a size difference between helmets so mine doesn't fit.

And yeah I am thinking of just using my pushbike chain and lock for the helmet and just attaching it to the luggage rack / handles. It wasn't so much the lock I was concerned about as how secure it was going to be if I left it. This being england after all I had heard some stories of kit being tampered with and was wondering if this was a common thing or not. So far its been pretty unknown as far as I can tell, the stories I found on google seemt o be the extremes.

I found a way of storing it in the end. I just hold the chin strap inside the storage bit under the seat and close it. The helmet just rests down the side of the body nexct to the seat. Not a great solution but functional for short time periods.

There is a clip on the under seat of most bikes that you can put your d ring around from your helmet, making it secure. I put my gloves under the pillion seat also. If you put your helmet under the seat and close it you may risk dropping it. Have a look for a metal hook type thing under your seat, bit more secure.

Sorry if this is what you are doing but your post sounded like you are just holding it and securing it with the seat.
