Guest Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 As a newbie and buying my first gear, I've been trying on some helmets and one thing I dislike is that the field of view is restricted a bit, you just don't have the same peripheral vision as you do without one. I know people get used to wearing a helmet and turning their head more than they normally might but I've read that some helmets are better in this regard and was wondering if someone could recommend some from their experience with a wider view? I'm looking at a full face, with pin lock or ability to add one, clear visor and a budget of £150.Thank you Quote
Stu Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 buy the helmet you like and what fits you right! all helmets have to pass a standard and the view will be included in that by what is the best helmet for you and you will get used to what view you have fit is the most important thing when buying a helmet there is no point been able to see a few mm more in a helmet that doesnt fit! Whitey1984 Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 By the one that fits right, its like when your driving a car the field of view is obstructed by the door pillars etc, by moving your head slightly either right or left will make up for any shortfall in visor visibility Quote
Guest Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 As already said above get the one that fits and that you feel comfortable with. I picked one that was a tad more snug than I'd have liked. After wearing it in a bit the padding has compressed a little so it's now spot on Quote

After wearing it in a bit the padding has compressed a little so it's now spot on That's interesting to note. I know fit is the most important but a good fit and slightly wider view is preferable to me. I've tried a few on in different brands and they were tight (just about tolerable) but yet I was still able to move the helmet up and down (so the chin protector rises towards my nose) and a little side to side. I'm a medium. Small size is just painful! I've read a proper fitting helmet shouldn't do that but I've struggled to find one that doesn't. Maybe I have a funny shaped head? They all made me feel a bit 'tunnel-visioned'. Quote
Stu Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 maybe your manhandling them too much go in to a shop and ask the sales guys to help you out when it comes to helmets they don't just sell them they do make sure they fit right! in fact when it comes to any bike gear I have yet to find anyone just trying to sell stuff they always make sure its right for you and give good advice.....maybe its because they are bikers themselves Quote
Tango Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 I get on really well with my Bell lid.......opening is pretty wide....... Quote
Bonniebird Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Different makes of helmet seem to fit different shaped heads better. I fit Shoeis or Bell for instance. My Bell lid M2 should come under budget. It is very light and has good peripheral vision and plenty of ventilation so should feel less claustrophobic for you.It isn't pinlock though but the ventilation reduces fogging.Only if it fits though Quote
BikerMooFromMars Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 If you find helmets don't fit you so well, you may find the ones that you can pump up to fit your face better work well for you. I have an awesome Shark helmet that has a pump - I put it on, press the pump on the side several times and it fits perfect, the field of view is great too and comes with an optional pin lock - which you probably wouldn't use to start with as it does restrict your view, but is of course optional. Not sure if other brands have the pump feature too, but worth asking next time you try one on. Mine cost £140 I think at the NEC bike show a couple of years back- bargain! Also have owned the basic black Spada helmets £60 - fitted perfect, have a high (is it Sharps?) rating and I had an off where I hit my head first and was like hitting my head on a pillow haha ! Worth a try...only bought the Shark one cos I dropped the Spada one several times and it was pretty http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx302/BikerMooFromMars/Mobile%20Uploads/5732d4c7-efeb-4d62-9905-6beeee7050f3_zpswewihzvm.jpg This is the best pic I can find of it right now - it has a bright green compass on the sides, looks immensely cool! Fozzles is a fan of them too Quote
fq-craigus Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 My hjc has a real wide field and full field pinlock insert. Hjc is-17 have a look at one and see what you think Quote
Guest Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 My hjc has a real wide field and full field pinlock insert. Hjc is-17 have a look at one and see what you think I like the pearl white one. Does the sun visor flip up out of the way when not needed? I was also looking at the Caberg Hyper X.One more question, I've seen some helmets described as Bluetooth ready. Will a bluetooth intercom fit any helmet? Quote
al_stu Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 Bluetooth ready usually means you can buy their bluetooth kit. Not any bluetooth kit. Its just a little cover on the helmet that can be removed to insert the main unit. Or at least that's my understanding. Quote

Not familiar with the cabergs. Quote

RantMachine Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 My Spada Sting has an almost ridiculously wide field of view. They don't make them any more but a couple of places are clearing out old stock so you might be able to get a good deal if they still have your size, but you could also consider the model that has replaced it, the Spada Intrepid. Benefits from the addition of a drop-down sun visor, so you don't have to wear sunglasses under the lid like I do You're going for a V-Strom, right? So it wouldn't look out of place with that bike. Thesmeee Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 something ive found is different brands of helmet seem to fit different head shapes better, also their sizing scale will differ slightly to, you maybe a M with brand A, and a L with brand B.Try on a good selection and find what you like and fits you well Quote
onesea Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Recently I had a similar issue.. My first helmet had become loose and I noticed the lack of corner vision particularly with the Pinlock Fitted.I treated myself to one of these Shark Vision R. OK I got the Carbon one http://www.helmetcity.co.uk/categories/ ... Clearance/On offer they are sub £200. My Ride home it was a revelation, quieter (but still some noise) it was like looking out of a conservatory after looking out of a port hole. The Sun-visor is good to.The Carbon one has the pumped up cheek pads. Quote

I'll see if I can try one on somewhere. I wouldn't pay the original price for one but £150 seems good. Ah, but will it go with a V-strom? hehe! Quote
RantMachine Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 I don't think you genuinely need to worry too much about whether your lid will go with your bike. All I was inferring in my earlier post is that you might look like a bit of a numpty if you bought a dualsport lid and weren't buying a bike that had a bit of an off-road look to it. That's why I had my white Sting for when I rode my GS and my normal black helmet for when I rode my little cruiser....Talking about my bikes in the past sense sucks balls. Quote

I know, I was just kidding I know what you mean though. I tried on a Schoei which was a perfect fit, along with an imperfect price tag of £470! Next! Quote
Throttled Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 The webBikeWorld website tests helmets and rates the field of view. http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle- ... elmets.htm Quote
