I added a USB charger so I could use my phone as a sat nav. It is definitely wired in correctly because I got someone else to do it

The problem is that when the sat nav is on, the phone battery will eventually go flat after about 3 hours of use from a fully charged phone. If I do not use the sat nav the phone will charge from flat to 100% with no problems. Is that normal with a usb charger, or have I got a duff one?

you will be charging in USB mode rather then AC mode

have a google of it this is well covered around the web

in USB mode you will get a max of 500ma charge where as in AC mode you will get probably over 1000ma depending on the charger and what the phone can take

there is ways to trick it to charge in AC mode

what will the charger put out do you know?

Might just have a low current charger. The satnav draws most of the current leaving very little for the phone.

Need to ensure your charger can supply at least 2amps.

Ah yes!! Could still be the problem though. The screen takes most power, so with the screen on, the power requirement to charge as well may be too high for the charger.

I have a USB volt/current meter, bought from China for a few quid, thats useful to see how well things are charging. Theres a huge difference in chargers.

Bored so i just tried two chargers with the same phone in the same state of charge with screen on taking a photo.

First one (Sainsbury's own Max 2.1amp)

shows 0.73amps @ 5.03v = 3.6watts

Second one (LG Max 1.2amp)

shows 0.63amps @ 4.9v = 3.08watts

Older chargers were only 500ma chargers (max 2.5watts @5v). That wouldn't be enough to power the phone and charge it up.

Just shows how different chargers can be!

Note: Not for use with Apple products!

The OPs charger / USB outlet should be OK. Just needs the phone to use 'AC Mode' charging when switched on.

I had this issue with my Note3 and now my LG G4. I solve it by reducing the brightness to around 70%. Seems to charge fine then.

Works with mine, not sure if that's because I'm still on iOS7

Tried that but I could hardly see the screen.

I have this on my bike...... http://buybits.com/angled-micro-usb-har ... er-reviews

It's been on the bike for 3 years now and I use it mainly to power the phone for the satnav app. I like the fact that it only wakes up if the phone is connected and needs charging...... 8-)

The cable end would not fit through into the water proof case so as to be able to charge the phone.
