4th Replicant Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Hi all. I give my brother my old Virago 125 after I bought bigger bike. He just phoned me to say that during the cold mornings he stupidly left the choke on and rode the bike the last few cold morning. Now he says when the bike is stopped at lights or whatever the engine slowly dies then cuts out. He says it's happening everytime he has to stop. I already give him an earful after telling him not to ride the bike with the choke on. Does anyone know what the problem with the bike is? Quote
Tiggie Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Probably fouled plugs, nice and simple (plus cheap!) fix Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 as above put new plugs in it then use the choke to start when cold and slowly take the choke off Quote
Stu Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 you can ride a bike with choke on with no problems if it needs it on cold days it needs it! is he only going short distances? it might not be warming up enough to be able to be taken off choke and has he touched the idle screw at all Quote

I'm gonna go up tomorrow and try the idle screw. He's being riding the bike about 40 minutes 30 to 49 minutes with the choke on. I see someone said above you can ride with the choke on, I never actually knew that. Quote
Hoggs Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Should have warmed up in 30 mins! I keep mine on for about 5 or so (but I have a temp gauge now which takes the guess work out!). The 125 always needed it on for a bit longer. Always a bit embarrassing stopping at lights and it dying on you.... Quote
ssray Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 It has not been a choke for very many years, It`s a fuel enrichment circuit , it only works properley at low throttle openingsWhen you whip the plugs out check the colour Quote
mattycoops43 Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 Get it on a good long ride without choke on to clear it out. Quote
