JBaptist Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 I'm going to be parking my bike outside my missus's house, so I'm after a disc lock and alarm if possibleI do have a chain but there's nowhere to attach it to, and when it's parked at my folks place it's in a shed, with a van parked in front of the door so pretty secureI was going to buy a disc lock / alarm from halfords but the salesman put me off (bad salesman)He said he had one and it malfunctioned one time and he couldn't turn it off (ended up riding to the beach and burying it in the sand apparently)Is this a common thing or was this just misfortune?I don't want to be a nuisance and having to dealing with one going off all the time as I have kids and there are neighbours with young children tooThanks if you can help Quote
Joeman Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Why didn't he taken the batteries out??? Quote
Hoggs Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Why didn't he taken the batteries out??? Because you need an allen key and it's obviously quicker, easier and cheaper to drive to the beach and bury the damn thing than get a key from the place you work at. Quote
JBaptist Posted January 22, 2016 Author Posted January 22, 2016 I have no idea I didn't ask him, if he didn't tell me that story he may have made a sale Quote
Hoggs Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 To be actually helpful, I had an oxford screamer disc lock alarm that had gone a bit funny and when you locked it it went off regardless (think the reset button had stuck but couldn't figure out how to get to that bit!) but it stopped as soon as you unlocked it. Took the batteries out in the end (which took 2 mins with an allen key) Quote
JBaptist Posted January 22, 2016 Author Posted January 22, 2016 Thats the one that was there haha, guess I should avoid them then Quote
Hoggs Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 TBH I bought a couple more oxford (non screaming!) disc locks and I'm not massively impressed - especially as they were around £20. You have to turn the key back and forth a few times, then wiggle, then back and forth again to get everything lined up before they will open which isn't great when you're doing it in a cold dark garage. JBaptist Posted January 22, 2016 Author Posted January 22, 2016 Loads of the reviews for Disc locks with alarms on them say they can be set off by rainI live in Wales, there's always rain....any good ones out there that are rain proof? Quote
JRH Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 I use something like this.http://www.fastbikebits.com/product/491 ... ac12802998No alarms but can not be prised apart and bolt cropper can not be used. Could pair this with a movement alarm fitted under the seat so not affected by rain. Quote
Paul-Kent Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 I'd avoid Oxford disc locks as Hoggs mentioned, I find the keys very "soft" and easily bent .Saying that, I still use one as I'm too tight to replace it [emoji6] Quote
MR_W Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Been using my Oxford disc lock for 8 years and no issues.... Quote
fullscreenaging Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 I have the oxford patriot disc lock. Great piece of kit. The key shaft is a U shape so will not bend. You could always look at the croclock. It goes on your throttle and locks the front brake on. Quote
CrookzV4 Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 In my experience the technology isn't there for alarmed disc locks. I've had two different Oxford ones (Screamer, boss). Within days of using both, as soon as we got wind or rain they went off constantly. Both times Oxford said it was a faulty sensor, but I don't believe them. Quote
