New Shock or Rebuild?

Recommended Posts

So I'm considering having my shock rebuilt but this will cost about £100 and I'm not sure how much better it will be. It's the OEM shock on the K2 GSXR 600.

Alternatively I'm considering picking up one of these Nitron shocks for about £400

So basically, after some opinions. Has anyone had a shock rebuilt that is as old as mine (15 years) and does it make that much difference? or would I just be better off grabbing the new shock?

Kind of trying to gauge rebuild vs new shock.

Anyway have at it!

Cheers.

100quid to rebuild a 15 year old OEM shock, or 400 for updated aftermarket shock using modern technology and probably more adjustable....

New shock for me ;)

See if you can find a old hagon unit on ebay cheap enough ( £50) mark and then contact hagon for how they charge to refurb (mine would have been £100 approx but as my unit had been superceded therefore they couldnt refurb it they replaced it with a new unit at a discount price of £200) instead of the £340 pricetag

Well I had kind of already set my mind on the new shock and just needed a little encouragement. :D

Shock is on order!

I have experience of both. On my old Fireblade I had the OEM shock rebuilt by Steve Jordan with a spring to match my weight. Cost £140. Totally transformed the bike's handling. However, a year later I bought a Nitron shock for it on impulse and as good as it was I didn't improve the handling in any way so concluded that a shock rebuild was enough for me. I sold the Nitron on Ebay after I sold the bike.

Saying that, I think you will notice the difference over your knackered shock.

A rebuilt shock is only as good as the person rebuilding and setting it up

if they altered the shim stack or the valving in anyway then they can be made as good as the most expensive shocks after all its the valving that does the work

A lot of people who rebuild them just rebuild them to stock specs the hard part is finding someone who will work with you and rebuilt it to your weight or at least know how to make the shock better than stock with just a few tweaks

True and that was my point mate. I'd recommend Steve Jordan for a rebuild after my experience :D
