Mickly Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 So I’m cleaning the carbs up for the Trophy, I’m ditching the old air box and tubes contraption and gonna put on foam filters. The air box inlet side of the carbs are oval with a separate small chamber - what’s it for?It seems to divert air into to the carb top. Please see pic. I’ve polished up one of the float bowls and sprayed with 3 coats of petrol resistant lacquer...... I then picked up the carb and thought ‘WTF have I done???’ There is no way I’ll get the carb that shiny with all its books and crevices Quote
ferret Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 that hole lets air into the diaphragm at the top of your carb if your putting pod filters on make sure they dont block it ,if they do you will struggle to set it up properly. Quote
megawatt Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 Probs an airway to diaphragm or pilot jet. Quote
Mickly Posted November 23, 2018 Author Posted November 23, 2018 Thanks both.I’m gonna use the link pipes from the carb to air box then put the pods on those. Quote
Snod Blatter Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 For what it's worth, CV carbs don't like pod filters as the changing air velocity (buffeting, side winds etc) really messes with them (makes the slide go up and down). They are better with an air box which will feed them air more smoothly, and of course a well designed airbox will have a resonant frequency that will help reduce flat spots or increase performance in a certain rev range, whatever the designer aimed for. It keeps the rain from blocking the filter too..But carry on if you want Quote

Really. As Snod has said, CV carbs don't like pods. End of. Quote
Mickly Posted November 23, 2018 Author Posted November 23, 2018 The airbox is an ugly carbuncle of epic proportions - I’ve let it out to a family of 10 illegal immigrants.I think I’ll have to consult those who’ve gone down this road before me, not as easy as I thought... as usual !! Quote

fastbob Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 Ever wondered why people with streetfighters and chops with pod filters are always blipping the throttle even when they are reversing in neutral ? Probably because the idle speed is f****d or to cover up the flat spots . I'm not saying pod filters can never be set up right but I've never been able to do it . Look great but they are nothing but trouble. Quote
Mickly Posted November 29, 2018 Author Posted November 29, 2018 Cleaned and lacquered carb next to one yet to do Bloody hard work. Quote
