I've been given a WK GO 50 jjt3 and have watched many Youtube videos on the various aspects of maintenance and servicing. It's a simple question, but from what I've seen on YouTube, maybe not. I want to connect the battery. I've seen guys doing it the standard way - negative first, positive last. THEN, I've seen mechanics in bike shops connecting the positive first. Begs the question: Are Chinese mopeds earthed positive or negative? For such a simple machine it seems there's a world of mixed up information online. Appreciate any advice, thanks Quote
dynax Posted February 10, 2021 Posted February 10, 2021 I would imagine it would be a negative earth, simplest way to test is using a meter for continuity, disconnect the battery then test negative lead to frame/engine, then do the same for the positive remembering to turn on the ignition, doing it with the battery disconnected also removes the possibility of a short circuit when testing positive to frame/engine, always do the negative side first so if you have continuity no need to test the positive. It is safer to connect the positive first, if the spanner/screwdriver accidentally touches any metal work, there is no problem since the earth is not yet connected. When you connect the earth - if the spanner/screwdriver touches metal work - no problem its what its connected to anyway. You just have to be careful when working on the earth you don't touch the positive - make sure to put the red cover over the positive terminal. 1 Quote

On negative earthed vehicles, which most are, always disconnect the earth first and reconnect it last. Much safer. Quote

If you go back to 60's and earlier you find vehicles with Dynamos, these had positive earth. Quote

I'm well aware of historic electrics, I used to drive them, I even remember flashing them to reverse the polarity on lucas Dynamos, I was referring to modern vehicles Quote
