S-Westerly Posted November 19, 2023 Posted November 19, 2023 Tasty looking bike and not much sign of HD dna other than the engine. Quote

And one issue had a HD special which I must admit caught my eye and was up to that point the only HD based bike that I ever thought: "I would buy that." This when the Cafe racer style was being introduced. or reintroduced by Triumph most obviously with its Speed Triple 900 (I owned one a year or two later): Sadly, only 20 were ever made in 1994. It was called the HDS1200 and was built by the grandson of the founder of Velocette. Reynolds 531 tube bronze welded frame and swingarm Full floater cast iron Brembo brakes Goodman designed magnesium wheels, built by Techno Magnesia Marzocci front forks, independently adjustable compression and rebound damping That looks really nice, I wonder if I will be the only one who sees a bit of the Hesketh in there? Probably better built though. Cheers Ian Quote

The Fatboy was an awesome bit of kit but I missed the smaller bike.Don't know why it's clinging to the ceiling lol. Cheers Ian What does the difference feel like with the Stage One tune ? Quote

So far unridden but it seems to start easier and the tickover isn`t as lumpy. I suspect there are lean spots in the original mapping for emission targets. I will report back once new map completed and test mileage under my belt. Cheers Ian Quote

I can't say that I find mine lacking at all but it's only my second Harley so I really don't have a benchmark . Still can't get the battery out by the way . That screw is wearing out cobalt drill bits . God knows what it's made out of . I'll have another go at it at the weekend . Quote
Ian Frog Posted November 21, 2023 Posted November 21, 2023 Hi Bob I never actually took the battery out as I just used the maintenance cables for my Optimate. Your bike already has the stage 1 and what I a doing to the new one is just copying what I experienced before. Your bike was always a good starter and I found it a much smoother runner than other Harley`s I have encountered. Cheers Ian Quote

I just assumed that because the filter is still in an air box it was still untuned . I thought that a different backplate needed to be fitted so that even though the original chrome cover remains , the filter is exposed all round . But that's just because of how my Sportster was set up . As I've said , it runs great . The only time it let me down was when I went for a rather over exuberant overtake and I hit the rev limiter mid way through . What pipes are on your new one ? Quote
Ian Frog Posted November 22, 2023 Posted November 22, 2023 On my stage 1 kit the filter had a different backplate that goes under the original cover, which is what I suspect you have. The pipes I went for are identical to the ones you have. just the remap to do as soon as I get a chance. The new p[pes are on the post that @janinej put the right way up for me last weekend lol. Cheers Ian Quote

Ian Frog Posted November 22, 2023 Posted November 22, 2023 When I am next in the garage I will photograph the standard one I have just taken off if it helps? Cheers Ian Quote

Here you go . A Stage One filter kit looks like this . This particular one is Arlen Ness but the Screaming Eagle one is much the same . You have the option of fitting the black finishing disk , an aftermarket circular cover or the original chrome cover although that is asking rather a lot of a single bolt . Mine has the original back plate with the little air scoop which , in combination with the chrome cover , effectively forms an airbox . Quote

I await an update with baited breath . Quote

Cheers Ian It's been a long hard week so please forgive me for being so slow on the uptake . What are you actually replacing ? The backplate AND the filter element or just the filter element ? The back plate in THIS picture is a standard item and not part of a stage one set up . Quote
Ian Frog Posted November 24, 2023 Posted November 24, 2023 Hi @fastbob You really need to work less hard lol. What I have photographed is the original back plate and filter that I have removed and the label is from the stage 1 kit I have installed. My hope is your set up is already a stage 1 filter as your pipes are already in place and I found it ran absolutely spot on. Cheers Ian Quote

That proves conclusively that I do NOT have a Stage One filter or backplate . I would be interested to see what the new one looks like when it is installed. ( Without the chrome cover obviously ) Quote

My filter came from Uppingham and I have found that both they and Vee Twin in Northampton can do the ecu flash so then I can do a true comparison. Cheers Ian Quote
Ian Frog Posted November 25, 2023 Posted November 25, 2023 You wouldn't believe that I haven't even ridden it yet and it's only got 1.5k miles on it. But while fitting a lay down bracket for the number plate access to the inner rear mudguard was tight and it was an opportunity to check and grease fittings that had probably never been disturbed since she was born 15 years ago. I haven't forgotten @fastbob and the filter photo lol. Cheers Ian Quote
