I don't know if this is the right forum but here goes...

 

Has anyone had any experience with fitting a DNA Air Filter ?  Is there any noticeable improvement in performance or fuel consumption ?  

I have a prehistoric 1991 Yamaha TDM 850 with Mikuni BDST 38 carbs.  Will I need to alter the jetting ?

I have seen some positive reviews but second or even third opinions are appreciated.

Its appears to be a straightforward copy of the OEM, perhaps a little more efficient. its not marketed as a race filter (stage 2 or 3)  so.. you might be expecting more than its able to offer.  or at least that's what the website seems to be saying about the filter for your bike. You will always see improvements when you replace an old filter with a new one.. that's in part the point of doing it - engine gets the air it needs, it runs as it should. The website literature for your bike makes no mention of further modifications. That tells me its just a straight copy of the OEM.

 

They do produce more... err, special (race) filters. but not for your bike. Just this one, below. is it the same part number?

Yes, that's the one.    

If there's no noticeable improvement, I won't be too disappointed.  However if it can be cleaned and reused as good as new I'll be quite contented.....Scotch attitude....careful with money !

I would, but factoring costs into it make a re-usable filter a better bet than either a very expensive genuine Yamaha part or a suspect pattern one.

I've been looking into K&N , DNA and similar " High Performance " air filters . Seems like you can't have it both ways . Your bike either breaths clean air or it breaths more air . Try smearing a little grease around your carb / injector throat and you'll soon find out what's finding it's way through that expensive fibre and gauze filter . More than any paper style element would let through that's for sure .

If the bike is running fine with your current setup of the paper/fibre old filter and you buy the road version of the cotton filter you dont have to be worried about rejetting the bike.

Only thing is to not over oil the gauze.

 

Low level race versions are just a lower weight (thinner) with slightly higher gauge (bigger gaps) cotton, higher level race ones are even lighter see the gauge get bigger again. So more air flow but bigger particles of debris will enter the engine.

 

if this is a road bike for road use keep to it as u can use it however u want and clean it as  as often as ud replace the std filter.

race ones need washing every hundred or hundreds of miles NOT thousands, very gently and will be luckly it it lasts the time of the bike unlike the road versions.
