Treebeard74 Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 Afternoon all, I'm 6 foot 4 and usually a size XL or L in normal civvy clothes. Nowhere in the world of fashion am I a 3XL apart from the land of motorcycling! I'm looking for a summer biking jacket and I currently have a Weise Scout (3XL!) When I tried it on in the shop it seemed a good fit, as soon as I'm on the bike it's halfway up my back! I find that most jackets come up short in length and so was wondering if anyone knew of a retro summer jacket (or not that retro if you like), that was sufficiently long to keep the wind off my back. Cheers Phil Quote
Simon Davey Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 (edited) @Treebeard74 I've recently bought an Alpinestars Drystar jacket, and it's the "long" variety, which is true to size. I bought it over sized to allow plenty of airflow, as I do have a great winter jacket. It doesn't ride up my back, and I ride a sports-tourer (when it's not in the menders). Maybe consider buying a jacket and trousers that zip together? Try them on zipped together, and do squats etc. Edited July 11, 2024 by Simon Davey Quote

Its a tough question.. less so if your normal riding position is upright. but not so easy if you are leaning forward as summer jackets are always short.. or shorter. and will obviously ride up at the back. This assumes by summer jacket you mean fully vented.. mesh type. An alternative might be to lower your expectations and look for a jacket that had multiple vents and most crucially has a removable thermal AND waterproof layer. then improve heat dispersal with technical underclothes. fast wicking T-shirts and so on. I would head for the largest retailer you can find and see what they have. speak to the staff. take your time. 2 Quote
RideWithStyles Posted July 12, 2024 Posted July 12, 2024 (edited) Sizing world is very different to each sport or hobby and even any given manufacturer end of you dont get hung up about sizing to civvy clothes. Normally it’s not the size of the jacket that affects that but the cut of it and what your using it on. If you’ve gone a touring jacket that extends with extra material beyond your crotch and crack with pockets etc. yes you can sort of sit on the back tail of the jacket but most of the time it just pulls at the hips and top legs and pulls the front up digging at you front, so you’ll move to give room which then release the back the front just bunches up and the rear will lift up which is where most likely the back protector will be higher and bunches top of shoulders and neck so it sort of puffs up. Sounds like you went for fashion fit/cut rather than rider fit/cut. now you’ve got a sports cut jacket but was it enough for you? depending on your body fit, keg or take build, Broad shoulders or slender, low shoulder height to neck relationship. Everyone is different and what is good for one is terrible for another. now if it’s riding up while you have your arms up as in a riding position I’d guess it’s cut is for a broader/stockier body with less movement so either the under arm has not enough movement/flexibility designed into it-stretch panels are great for this. which to allow you move your arms up so the jacket has to lift itself up and or the shoulders/protectors have not enough give to allow lift. sorry to say it but I don’t think you found the right one for you. Great jacket, premium feel to materials and let's in gallons of air. Plus if has some pockets for storage. I'll wear it with a light windproof coat in the early morning when there's a chill then just the Knox jacket in the evening when it's warm. Quote
Phil1 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 I too have had this little problem (I'm 6'2"). The only decent way around it really is to have matching two piece that zip together at the waist. I imagine different bikes will exacerbate this issue further, sports bike with a forward lean and high pegs will be much worse than an GS for instance. 1 Quote
Throttled Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 I would recommend Rev'it, as they are a Dutch company and make clothing for tall Dutch people. Quote

That is solely with the assumption of the manufacturer assuming that a 6ft plus person is a set and defined length- set lower and thigh, set spine, set shoulder and neck length… if your not this of what they think then its not fitting properly. Simple as. Quote
Capt Sisko Posted July 16, 2024 Posted July 16, 2024 (edited) I have an RST Pro Series Ventilator suit, forget about the removable liner and it's great, except of one thing. The jacket's a bit short at the front. Fine when your riding, but off the bike & standing around looks a bit stupid. Worth thinking about fit in that way as well. One wouldn't want to end up looking like a Tellytubby.... Quote
