Hi everyone

As the title suggests my 3 year old alpinestars boots are peeling at the front :-(

Has anyone got any idea if the damage is repairable with some kind of leather paint or the like

Boots are 3 or 4 years old and are in otherwise good condition

They were looked after well and regularly treated with duckswax the soles and other parts of the boot are fine just the flexi ribbed part at the front

Cheers

Looks like they're loosing the dye.

I would say that is time for sanding the loose bits, get some waterproof leather dye and redo them.

You will find loads of info on yt

just having a look on Amazon now

Plenty of leather dye but not so many waterproof ones

On close inspection the part that's peeling looks just like some kind of coating / paint  put on the leather

A little more research might help me find a suitable product to stick on

Thanks

Much as I hate to be the pessimist, they looked f****d to me.

I was thinking that too :-) that they could be too far gone

But then Husoi posted a link for Acrylic leather paint which I had seen on amazon for not big money so might be worth a shot

and if it does not work I could convince myself that I need some new TCX goretex boots :-)

Cheers

Thanks for the link  :-)

Could be worth a try as I had seen that paint on amazon and it's one of the few sites that ship to Ireland without any extra cost with Prime

The things that will go wrong on a pair of boots and will be unlikely to be worth the cost of repairs are the soles, zips, some of the seams starting to let water in and holes on the leather.

Those boots aren't dead yet and a good tlc will make them last a bit longer.

Reminds me when I used to buy marines boots that a shoemaker kept refurbishing by replacing soles and some times the leather straps.

It's hard to say from the picture. But it looks like the leather is  delaminating to me. I've never had that on Alpinestars before. But I did on a pair of RST boots.

Yeah it is like some film of very thin leather or rubber or other material was glued / stuck on and now it is coming away

There are no holes or anything like that

I would be thinking the material that is coming away was the waterproof bit  as the material underneath feels spongy like it is not leather

That’s PU coating not leather.

PU is quite water proof naturally though very thin.
Not repairable in an actual sense. if you “paint” it all your doing is putting a paint/lacquer onto a expanded foam and fabric membrane which is exposed, makes it non breathable until the allowed paint/lacquer layer fails which will be quickly as the under layers are not ideal for use as a main layer.

yes you could paint but looks rough and ok a month or so at a distance before cracking and leaking…it’s down hill condition unless you replace.

holes are made when they put the threads in to make it ribbed to allow movement and compromises it when they did that, then just add movement, rubbing, crap hitting it, cleaners etc will just make it fail much quicker.

Sorry but realistically yes.

other would be to source components, change and turn your shoe making skills on but cheaper to buy another pair…start saving for winter to buy on sales.

Ive still got my first pair of boots which are sidi’s vert back in the day, nowt fancy or special as they aint water proof but do an excellent job even so.

that pair of boots I even bought at the same time as a spyke leather one piece back in 2009?

still got the leather but I don’t wear that as much nowadays especially with this bike and top box 🤭.but the boots still gets used a lot apart from the worst weathers.

Been used on all my bikes owned and most of my brothers lots too, tracked a good few times etc.

just this year the heel sole just started to come away from the boot so I glued it…sole still has meat on it and good for another 10years I think and hope.

Even convinced the wife it would be worth it long term to buy a pair when the other brands kept wearing too soon.

i think I’ll be ending up wearing wellington boots if I can’t get hold of another pair just like them.😅

Sidi Vertabrae boots will still be around after the end of the world. I had a pair for nearly 20 years and gave them away, probably still being used. Squeaky though, I used to squirt a bit of WD40 down the back from time to time.

I’ve had my Alpinestars SMX 6 boots (no flaking) for 8 years now, love them but I’ve not worn them at all this year since buying a pair of Richa Slick ankle boots which I wear with armoured jeans.
