Mickly Posted March 7 Posted March 7 So using CAD (Cider Aided Design), I have made a 1/4 scale model of a bike lift / ramp ( not for a 1/4 scale bike you muppets ) to see if it might be feasible to build one out of wood. Now I need to decide how much it might cost v a second hand one plus how much effort to build it … also how prepared am I to just laugh when it collapses on top of me ? 2 2 Quote
husoi Posted March 7 Posted March 7 It will depend on what wood you will be using and the weight of the bike. I would be careful even if you use oak or any other hardwood that isn't strong enough for the stress. If it's, an 125 then you will be fine with oak. The structure doesn't really looks like 1:4 ratio or you will be using very thick beams. Remember to allow for aluminium plate on the platform for better distribution of the load. Quote
Mickly Posted March 7 Author Posted March 7 Thinking of using 100 X 60 CLS the bits for the model are 25 X 15 (ish) old bits of MDF I had lying around. Quote
Mickly Posted March 7 Author Posted March 7 Also thinking of using OSB on the platform with some more supporting beams if needed Quote

I saw something similar where they'd cut and extended a hydraulic bike lift. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Fp8bI03-Apg 1 1 Quote
Ian Frog Posted March 7 Posted March 7 Just something to consider is that the inevitable spillages of fluids on to osb would worry the bugger out of me ! Osb is not the most resistant of materials. I know it`s dearer but Ply or overlay with checkerplate before anything disappears through it lol. Cheers Ian 1 1 Quote
husoi Posted March 7 Posted March 7 For the top platform I would say resin layered 19 or 22mm plywood Usually known as phenolic resin plywood 1 Quote
Simon Davey Posted March 7 Posted March 7 So, we're all concerned about the platform, I would use OSB, with a 12mm rubber mat (the kind for horse stables) screwed on top. Easy to wipe, and will give good grip for the side/centre stands. 1 Quote
husoi Posted March 7 Posted March 7 How about.. Phenolic resin plywood then Durbar plate and on top the rubber Matt? 1 Quote
Bender Posted March 7 Posted March 7 I made a 7ft ramp out of 18mm ply with 2 2x4 on the back, it takes the weight of my Fazer no problem. 3 Quote
