Mold Posted Friday at 08:39 Posted Friday at 08:39 Does anyone know how the 'side of the road' police speed tracking vans work? I do know they can detect vehicles with a number plate on the back and the front, they detect speeding from both sides of the road, but what about motorcycles, they only have a plate at the back and if you are speeding toward them, how do they get a picture of your plate? I'm pretty sure the camera is facing out from the back and they have no forward looking camera. 1 Quote
bud Posted Friday at 08:41 Posted Friday at 08:41 It films you from both sides for identification purposes. Quote
Mold Posted Friday at 08:51 Author Posted Friday at 08:51 I've never seen any cameras facing forward, where is it? Quote
Bender Posted Friday at 09:09 Posted Friday at 09:09 Vans often have one pointing out the front window but they are hard to spot they are in the cab, they clock you speeding with the laser one then the time stamp ties up with the front one and hey presto your done. 3 Quote
Simon Davey Posted Friday at 09:13 Posted Friday at 09:13 Good question @Mold, I've often wondered about this myself. Quote

I can confirm this, don't ask how I know.... There is also a video of someone who was fine because they tracked him down later. Was kind of fun he stopped blocked his numberplate turned round but they still got him. 3 Quote
billysugger Posted Friday at 10:05 Posted Friday at 10:05 I got caught by a van that I hadn't seen, doing 40 in what I thought was a 40, but wasn't anymore Quote
S-Westerly Posted Friday at 10:32 Posted Friday at 10:32 (edited) Nearly got done by one on the A192 yesterday but saw it in time so pootled past at the required 40 mph. Even saw the camera at the front as I went past. BTW Northumberland / Tyneside is now full of stupid speed restrictions it never had when I lived up this way. Just as well for my licence. Capt Sisko Posted Friday at 13:01 Posted Friday at 13:01 (edited) 11 hours ago, onesea said: because they tracked him down later. Two things going on here. 1/ The police have 14 days to issue a NIP for speeding and/or if there's an element of doubt, say there's more than one named rider on the insurance policy, to ask you who was riding. 2/ If they believe you deliberately obscured your number plate they could come after you for attempting to pervert the course of justice. It's quite unlikely they'd do that for a single offence, but a multiple offender, no insurance, thought the vehicle had been used in crime etc, and they would check ANPR, CCTV and what other methods they use to track you. AND this is the big difference, perverting the course of justice is a criminal offence, the 14 day limit doesn't apply and a potential speeding ticket suddenly is the least of your problems. Part of the reason I am happy with the Enfield is not so easy to break the limits. Any car now will have cruise control for me now, it reduces the temptation. 2 Quote
Fiddlesticks Posted Friday at 19:47 Posted Friday at 19:47 Just discovered the speed limiter on the Volvo is wired to do 5mph either side of what it thinks is the current speed limit. Clever.. When it's right. 1 Quote
S-Westerly Posted Friday at 21:28 Posted Friday at 21:28 Ours regularly sees speed limits of 120 mph. I wish. Quote
bud Posted Saturday at 10:50 Posted Saturday at 10:50 I remember Chris Harris saying that the new cars where the auto speed limit is recognised. Then adjusted in the cruise control. Has trouble confusing 50 mph limits with 80! So you can find the car speeding up substantially as it leaves a lower limit. They are even aware of it happening on some speed awareness courses apparently. Quote
RideWithStyles Posted Saturday at 11:12 Posted Saturday at 11:12 Correct bud. It not always the auto cruise control, find this part of the technology is really poor in practice, it goes both ways. our car thinks it’s in a 20when its really in a 30mph because it may have seen a 20mph sign on a twenty so it goes into having a proper hissy fit of binging, bonging, flashing lights and very distracting unless you rather turn it off or on silent every time the car is switched off, Or it thinks it’s still in a 70 when really it missed the sign of the 40 or 50 even if it’s on a motorway….
