The advent of modern civilisation didn't just bring us easy sedentary lives and Disney land, it had the knock on effect that it brought in a million new ways in which to die horribly. So I do see the point of HSE but agree it has flaws. If you read the original story, he was a life long train fanatic, worked for the rail industry. People heard a loud thud, and found him lying on the floor, breathing, but bleeding from his head, having suffered a glancing blow from a gantry. This wasn't some random passenger leaning out to impress his mates, it sounds more like a guy who loved trains wanting to sneak a look outside the train for a view passengers don't get. It's a common theme, knowledge in a specific area can lead to complacency, which leads to taking more risk. And cost this poor chap his life, rather than just a nasty injury.

I'm feeling like we need a "Worst 1st Dates" thread

Was his tone one of enthusiasm? Or was he just overly impressed with himself for going to Japan? This determines whether he deserves help, or should just be left to stuff it up

I thought of this, but I also think of having a reactor scram button. And a remote system. If you could scram the reactor in the event of a attack remotely, pirates would just be taking control of a dead ship. I think it could work, they are confident enough to power aircraft carriers with them, which obviously are designed for war so will be at greater risk of sabotage/attack.

Check fuel lines - Should go downwards to carb from the tank. Any turns that make them go up, and you have a prime spot for a vapour lock to occur. Fuel mixture - Could the hot engine be causing the fuel to more readily turn to vapour, causing a very rich running event on a hot start. Lean out the mixture if possible and see if it makes a difference. Make sure carb float etc are all set to stock levels.

Sale of goods act and annulment make short work of both those things if you can prove you were pressured Stunning machine! Congrats on the purchase!

Cancel it while you can. If it doesn't feel right, don't let the salesman convince you to go through with it. They'll only say what's in their interest, not yours. The worst thing you can do is let the feeling of being obliged to go through with it let you walk into a bad decision!

Ships with on board solar/wave power plants? Make them hybrids

That's just awesome

This was my comment, but it's not set to go into decline for another 15 years at current rate. And fortunately, my company heavily dabbles in solar/wind/battery storage. Also, gas sounds bad sure, but in the open atmosphere methane is roughly 30 times worse as a greenhouse gas than the CO2 burning it creates. There will likely be a place for using it for some time to come yet due to it being the lesser of two evils. Especially whilst we need oil which inevitably digs up vast quantities of it. I'm told by a friend of mine that tidal might not be the answer. She's a environmental impact assessor, and essentially the effects of tidal energy on the environment are poorly understood. Hydro electric isn't pursued anymore in part due to the damaging effects limiting water downstream has on local eco-systems. It's feared tidal could be as damaging, plus you need a 7 metre tide. Solar works on a smaller scale. When it gets bigger solar thermal becomes a better option. Not much good in England though Wind turbines are coming along. Bearing technology is improving to make them last longer and longer.

All balls - Always been fine, the full kit with bushings was always the one I opted for. Pyramid parts - Always been fine Those are the two I usually use, usually just due to the convenience of the kits they come in. Just make sure when you fit the new seals you get them the right way up, look at the orientation of the inner lips of the seals you take off. Make sure you lube up the top of the fork and the new seal so it slips on with no nicks. Otherwise you will have a leak.

I work for a company that is doing an intermediary measure. My company tears out gas boilers and replaces them with gas fired engines, these engines then use a cooling circuit to heat the buildings water. The generators wind up to take the site load off the grid. The net effect is same gas usage, less (hopefully 0) electricity usage producing a CO2 saving. The next step from this when the grid gets so clean we contribute, rather than save CO2, is to have enough solar/wind power in place to heat thermal stores as their primary purpose. New build housing (especially apartments) can and do utilise the solar/wind generation already for hot water. After that, Nuclear (Thorium reactors are hopeful as they melt down safely in the event all else fails, and are capable of burning off nuclear waste). Once the environmental impacts are understood, tidal. Micro-grids are becoming more likely, where generation is more local and excess shared. It's going to be a fun time to be in the power generation industry

The world will go mad if we don't do anything to stop it. If anyone watches "The Planets" on BBC 2, watch the bit on Venus. How there's a fine line between the green house effect warming a planet, and frying it. You see what the worlds scientists are calling out for us to avoid. We made the mistake of building a society on finite materials that cause harm to our environment. So the cost to undo all of that is going to be huge. I have no doubt that corporations and government will take advantage of these changes, but they still need to be made, and they can't get away with things like they used to. My only hope is it doesn't come at too much added cost. Boilers/Cars need replacing, so it maybe just the case that one day we can afford to move over to an electric solution.

I really want a Tunnocks chocolate coated caramel wafer now

My gran (aged 94 and still driving/going strong today) told me of her family. She was one of 7, 2 girls and 5 boys. All 5 boys died in the war. My granduncle Earnest came back injured on two occasions, and went out to fight again each time, his last being D-day when he died on the beach. A big thanks to them, and I can only hope I'd live up to their standards in the same situation.

Clutch blew up now bike won't start! Yamaha MT-125. HELP!
Fozzie replied to Tavernalighieri's topic in Pitstop
Not to worry you, but the YZF-R engines were a bit fragile, and I think it shares the engine with that. If the oil even ran a little low, the engine lets go in a big way. I've known a couple that report the same thing, horrible grinding noise, big bang/bike stops, and the engine is seized solid. If the engine is seized, it won't start. Check the oil level first. Then drop the oil out of it into a container, send me a picture if you like. But if you see shards of metal or chunks then you know right away what's happened. Fortunately there are quite a few spare engines about for these bikes. The big thing I want you to do is not panic, everything is fixable chap -

He's 29 and a father of five, I don't think safety has ever crossed his mind

Good choice! The beemer is the better of those two bikes I think. The XJ6 is a good bike but under powered and too soft compared with the FZ6 that preceded it IMO. Just in time for the summer (not a guarantee of sunny weather but the rain won't be freezing at least )

I do the same... Do you think together we'd accidentally cancel out and be productive? Or would it be everything you've said²? The most recent being someone calling someone "the messiah" and I interrupted in a high voice "He's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy". Half the room laughed, half the room looked on in confusion No offence taken, a subtlety to my post was that the BBC (criticised by many recently for it's left/remain slant) had published data showing left wing affiliations to be worse in regards to terrorism than the right wing. In a piece discussing the rise in right wing incidents. The point there being, I could write a piece on the advantages of motorbikes, one of them being "they are safe" (which is statistically provable). You can bet someone will take issue with that and say "But cars are safer, you're not writing the whole truth there". And I could reply "Yes, and planes are safer than cars, what's your point? I was talking about bikes". And this is where the issue with mainstream media lies.

Got two today, pretty funny. Both I've seen on facebook... Now we've all heard the engine oil debate, but I came across one fella who waters his engine oil down with vegetable oil. He claims it saves a lot of money, and makes no difference to reliability, and he's done it for years. I had a quick skim through his other stuff, and found engine rebuild videos. He was convinced caused by him "pushing the bike past 100%"... I skimmed the video, scorched internals, quite clearly parts weren't getting adequate protection, but he seemed adamant it was his mad skillz The second was a bloke trying to change his bike tyre, using a spade to break the bead. A bit gung-ho... Then I saw the wheel was resting on the brake disc, on the concrete floor, and he was jumping on the spade Now I accept tyre beads are a pain to break, half the time I've done it with tyre levers, it's either gone easily in minutes, or I've had to give up and let a shop do it. But for this poor chap, the £40 to change/balance bike tyres is probably going to be far less than a new brake disc will cost.

Me looking around this thread for the loony left/right might showdown and seeing naked fisherman instead this morning... I love the internet. Chaos theory in action

How long until this becomes right vs left? It's worse than religion https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-47626859 Look at the graph on this news piece. It discusses right wing extremism while also using a graph showing the left wing has more instances of terrorism. But it also details the rise of right wing incidents. Reading between the lines, it seems the right and left are roundly as bad as each other, and there are far bigger problems actually out there (separatists/religious fanatics) Corbyn was egged, the man was jailed for 28 days and was labelled a right wing brexiteer. Farage was milkshaked. I can see it now, if he's let off, the right wing will feel ignored. If he gets worse, the left wing will say the radical right is rising and must be stopped. Both were assault end of the day, so lets see what happens first eh? My personal opinion? It's sunny this weekend, might go matlock bath for some fish and chips... Might get there early to avoid the crush, but then the roads won't be as warm so grip will be down... Decisions decisions... Because ultimately, this story like the Corbyn egging doesn't really matter to me, it's just media hysteria

I've rebuilt one of these engines, the gasket was an absolute pain to get on right as it sort of slots into the cover, but it twists and moves around and kept slipping out of place as I tried to refit it. Took about half an hour of fiddling about to get it on perfect. Put up some pictures of it so I can have a look. Hopefully all you need is a smear of instant gasket to get it to seal fully, but I didn't need it which is why I'm probing a bit further.

I do wonder if he will ever release the last two. It took 6 years to write the last. I'm half hoping he'll use the show as the basis now, and just add improvements where it's needed, and flesh out bits that needed more explanation. Sure it's the easy way out, but it keeps the on screen and on paper stories fairly consistent.
