Replacing helmet
Arwen replied to Liveware Problem's topic in Clothing, Luggage, Accessories and Security
I'm with the replace it crowd. Also, there are some really nice deals on Held helmets here just now... http://www.getgeared.co.uk/type/full-face-helmets/for/men? I'm tempted, and I don't really need a new one! -
Welcome to the forum. Don't get too down trodden by your first experience. Like learning clutch control on a car, clutch and throttle control on a bike does come with practise. It will just "click" at one point. But you are right, wrong sized gloves would have done you no favours! Hope you have more luck next week!

A few of my pets * spider phobia warning*
Arwen replied to painkiller's topic in News, Entertainment and Humour
Those^^ are ones I absolutely hate. I try not to kill them, but I will use paper/duster/cloths to shove them outside. It's mostly the way they float/bob around unpredictably that bothers me. :-/ -

I'm a bit like Reiver, I don't like spiders that have spindly legs and are all lanky. - The ones you find in houses and gardens. But if they look in proportion I'm alright with them. during the spring/summer my patio becomes a hunting ground for tiny jumping spiders, that I love to watch I did try to have a tarantula when I was a kid, however mum and dad said no. I ended up with 3 rats, which make fantastic pets too -

Oooo so many pretties! Is this one http://s570.photobucket.com/user/nocternal/media/New%20Tarantula%20album/GEDC0665_zps58dd1d3a.jpg.html a tually green/blue or is it just the light? I really like the red fringes on the first one too -
Personally, I feel proposing to someone that you spend the rest of your lives together should be a personal and intimate thing. Not done in front of a watching crowd. I've warned my other half if he was to pull a stunt like that I would say no. Who needs peer pressure around you when you agree to make a decision like that. Especially if she has no inclination that you are planning on asking. Take her somewhere nice, ideally somewhere that holds meaning for the both of you. Ask her there, then go meet up with your mates and go for a group ride out to celebrate.

Where about's are you? My local Honda/Yamaha dealer just started selling these bikes too. They look pretty cool.

Proposed changes to CBT and tests
Arwen replied to Stu's topic in CBT, Test and Advanced Training Information
Because it's a different theory test. There are many motorcycle specific questions in it. -
As above. It's a new bike, use your warranty and let the dealer sort it.

The thing I've never understood is the thing some women have for shoes, someone I know actually spent close to £1000 on a pair of high heels, which she couldn't wear for more than a couple of hours without them hurting her feet, essentially she was paying a lot of money to torture herself . If it were me I'd have spent that on something far more practical to torture myself- like a Dainese one piece . I buy gadgets and tools like a lot of women buy shoes and bags. Boots are my weakness however. If I want a pair of boots, I'll buy them. My bike boots were the most expensive so far however

Definitely sounds like joy riding to me. " The moped was ridden from the scene by another member of the group before police arrived" = Stolen bike? Hope the kid recovers, and this is seen as a warning for the rest of them.
-
Why is she saying no? If the answer is "because you already have one" ask her why she has multiple bags. The answer will be "for different occasions" or something like that. Explain that's why you want another bike. Buy the bike. Problem solved.
-
I don't think this is restricted to advance riding. The amount of pot holes and horrible slick bits of tar on the roads around here mean I appear to be "all over the place" when on some roads. Some drivers are simply ignorant.

Now that is the kind of review I like to read However, hope you do manage to find a nice heater for your garage soon.

Proposed changes to CBT and tests
Arwen replied to Stu's topic in CBT, Test and Advanced Training Information
As someone currently going through the tests, I see most of these changes in a positive way. A lot of the points are to do with apparently regulating training schools. This can only be a good thing, I've seen and heard all sorts of horror stories of people doing their first CBT. Some were barely on the road for 30min, but still issued a pass certificate! Other were not even given the change to go out on the road, for no apparent reason and force to pay another whole day of training. Yes, there are a lot of great schools out there, but equally there are loads of bad ones. The mention of doing a course to gain your full licence rather than sitting tests is good I think. Most people get at least a bit nervous about sitting a test. Which natuarly effects your abilities. Doing a course over 2 days or more, to demonstrate your road compantancy and general handling skills is more realistic in my book. For example, how many times have you had to do a perfect u turn (rather than turn in the road), without touching the ground since doing MOD1?(if you actually had to do MOD1) You should be tested on your ability to safely turn in the road, not on your "the ground is lava and my feet can't touch it" prowess. The skills needed to pass mod 1 are required and very helpful to have. But the test is not realistic. As for sitting the theory test before or alongside the CBT. My option would be completely new to the road = theory test must be passed before sitting CBT. Already have a licence = theory test alongside CBT. -

Wearing a neck buff helps cut off noise I have noticed. However, one of the reasons I bought the Scala headset was that their earphones simply plug in using a 3.5mm jack. So you can plug any earphone in you like.

Helmet/Leathers hanger
Arwen replied to Bhawk's topic in Clothing, Luggage, Accessories and Security
My helmet lives either on the sofa in the garage or on the top shelf in the boot cupboard at the front door. Gloves are usually beside it. The Jacket I wear most on the bike is kept over a dining room chair so long as it is dry. I've broken way to many hangers to keep trying to hang it up! If it is wet it is hung up over the bath till is it dry... Other jackets are on a shelf in the wardrobe. Trousers I use leave in the bottom of the wardrobe. Boots are in the boot cupboard. -
Mine is relatively easy to wheelie... Either sit a little further back on the seat or stick something heavy in the top box then pull away quickly and the front comes up. I hate the feeling of it though :-/

I'm old and I don't understand...

I agree. I'm only saying that gender neutral pronouns do have a place alongside their male and female counterparts. But not to describe transgender people, unless they wish to use them. -

If they are now a women then yea, it's "pint please darlin'". If they are now a male it is "mate". Not difficult. Ah but to know what he/she is/was forces you to assume his/her pre and post gender. If it's clear he is a man dressed as a woman, then surely "mate" is correct unless you also assume that its their (female) clothing that dictates their gender not their physical (male) characteristics in which case any man dressed in clothing that's accepted to be feminine must surely also be referred to as a female... I'm wearing a pink striped shirt today - pink being traditional a female colour.. is the barperson going to respond to me as darlin or mate?? I'm going to assume you do not know/are not aware of anyone who has been through the process. So here goes. Before someone goes through the gender reassignment operation they must live as their "chosen" gender for at least two years. Generally this involves everything from changing their clothing, using the toilets of their "new" gender, change their title etc. The end result is if they want to be a women, they become a women, if they want to become a man, they become a man. In all aspects but genitalia (a little more work to hide breasts pre-op, but it can be done with hormones). In my experience, there is no doubt about someones desired gender when they are going through this process. After all, I don't go looking at my work mates trousers to see if they really are male or not! I suspect you may be getting a bit mixed up with transvestites... Believe it or not, men who are serious about becoming a women do not dress like Dr. Frank N. Furter! -

However they do have their place. Hermaphrodites for example. They are neither male or female (biologically speaking) yet when they are born, male or female must be put on their birth certificate. There is currently no option for "neither" or "both". -

It is not hard to not offend a transgender person. Generally they make their choice known. If they are dressed like a women, they are a she. If they are dressed like a man, they are a he. I know quite a few people who have been through the change and I have yet to think "oh, are they male or female?" I think what the union is actually wanting is to use the pronouns Ze and hir. These are gender neutral/nonbinary pronouns (neither male or female) and applied to people who do not wish to be identified as either gender.
