    Hi @fastbob

You really need to work less hard lol.

What I have photographed is the original back plate and filter that I have removed and the label is from the stage 1 kit I have installed.

My hope is your set up is already a stage 1 filter as your pipes are already in place and I found it ran absolutely spot on.

    Cheers

    Ian

Ok then . That proves conclusively that I do NOT have a Stage One filter or backplate . I would be interested to see what the new one looks like when it is installed. ( Without the chrome cover obviously )

Back plate with and without filter and label from stage1 filter.

standard chrome cover goes back after the change so hopefully you have it already.

    Cheers

It's been a long hard week so please forgive me for being so slow on the uptake . What are you actually replacing ? The backplate AND the filter element or just the filter element ? The back plate in THIS picture is a standard item and not part of a stage one set up .

Ok , so if that is what's going on it , what is coming off it ? I'm delighted if that is , in fact , a stage one filter and housing but I can't imagine what a standard one must look like . I await an update with baited breath . 👍😁

Going to a cabin in the woods this weekend, getting good and pissed in a hot tub.

Last time we made friends with a bunch of middle aged couples accross the way, also pissed in their hot tub. We named them the "East Sussex swingers association"

Reckon they wanted some young meat. Not that we're so young.

Someone suggested ninja warrior one evening as it's nearby and the resounding verdict was yes but no bitching about your back, hips, knees, ankles, feet or any other part of you which you will 100% strain. Just sit there, drink your wine and quietly eat a couple of rennies occasionally.

Why would you go around pissing in people's Hot Tubs ?

Nah , I'm pretty sure I've got a standard backplate and filter but I'll do a bit more digging .

Here you go . A Stage One filter kit looks like this . This particular one is Arlen Ness but the Screaming Eagle one is much the same . You have the option of fitting the black finishing disk , an aftermarket circular cover or the original chrome cover although that is asking rather a lot of a single bolt .

Mine has the original back plate with the little air scoop which , in combination with the chrome cover , effectively forms an airbox .

On my stage 1 kit the filter had a different backplate that goes under the original cover, which is what I suspect you have.

The pipes I went for are identical to the ones you have.

just the remap to do as soon as I get a chance.

The new p[pes are on the post that @janinej put the right way up for me last weekend lol.

    Cheers

    Hi Bob

I never actually took the battery out as I just used the maintenance cables for my Optimate.

Your bike already has the stage 1 and what I a doing to the new one is just copying what I experienced before.

Your bike was always a good starter and I found it a much smoother runner than other Harley`s I have encountered.

    Cheers

    Ian

That's brilliant news ! I just assumed that because the filter is still in an air box it was still untuned . I thought that a different backplate needed to be fitted so that even though the original chrome cover remains  , the filter is exposed all round . But that's just because of how my Sportster was set up .

As I've said , it runs great . The only time it let me down was when I went for a rather over exuberant overtake and I hit the rev limiter mid way through .

What pipes are on your new one ?

So far unridden but it seems to start easier and the tickover isn`t as lumpy.

I suspect there are lean spots in the original mapping for emission targets.

I will report back once new map completed and test mileage under my belt.

    Cheers

    Ian

Cheers Ian . I can't say that I find mine lacking at all but it's only my second Harley so I really don't have a benchmark . Still can't get the battery out by the way . That screw is wearing out cobalt drill bits . God knows what it's made out of . I'll have another go at it at the weekend .

    Hi

Well I have gone full circle and new Dyna is on the bench getting it's stage 1.

The Fatboy was an awesome bit of kit but I missed the smaller bike.20231113_173722.thumb.jpg.68dbb5060d63b637dec9448931f3ed13.jpgDon't know why it's clinging to the ceiling lol.

    Cheers

What does the difference feel like with the Stage One tune ?

Given the braking on a Harley who wants to see what you are about to hit lol.

Actually the headlight on my Superglide was surprisingly good. certainly better than the Busa.

Haven`t tried Fatty at night yet but I am fairly sanguine about it.

    Cheers

    Ian

What ? I got caught out after dark and could hardly see a thing ! Took me ages to get home wobbling around at 40mph . That said , I haven't ridden in real darkness for years .

Well because @fastbob has posted how much he is enjoying my old Dyna I know there is no chance of buying her back again.

As a result when I got rid of the Fatboy I have found this.

Believe it or not 2008 one owner and only 1557 miles since birth.

Checked all previous MOT`s and mileage is genuine so I have swooped !

    Cheers

Ian , if you don't like the pull back risers I'll gladly do you a swap . 😉

  12. So you finished it then . Looks great . I've still got mine . Just can't get round to selling it . Somewhere in the back of my mind lurks the crazy notion to go touring the outer Hebrides on it because I don't fancy the idea of taking the precious Harley on the ferries . There's a lot of back to basics fun to be had coaxing the maximum performance from a smaller bike .

The crankcase breather should have a pipe about two inches long and about three quarters of an inch in diameter that links it directly to the bottom of the air box . This is a rubbish design that allows the crankcase to fill with fuel in the event that  the fuel tap and float valves fail at the same time . The breather pipe may still be knocking around your work area or sitting on top of the swinging arm .

I was about to agree with this then I noticed that I wrote it . 😂

You should get your neighbour to do it for you if you have a neighbour like mine who is good at fixing stuff.  I am going to have to learn basics myself one day though I suppose.

I wouldn't let my neighbour anywhere near my bike . What an odd reply . Solve a problem by giving it to someone else ? Not my style .

  15. So I got togged up for a quick ride around the lanes on this very pleasant Sunday afternoon and Ker Chunck , Ker Chunck , click click click .....F**k all ! Dead as a door nail . This is probably the battery terminals rather than the battery but I won't know for now because the single screw that holds the battery cover is already chewed up beyond practical use . Spent the last hour modifying screwdrivers with a Dremel but to no avail . I haven't worked out what to do yet because it's not accessible to any tools . Not a great end to the season .

  16. All in all not a bad biking summer considering I was still recovering from broken ribs and associated ailments . The highlights were touring Scotland in a week of perfect weather and taking part in Coventry Motofest  .  Apart from a broken throttle cable ,  all I did to the bike was put petrol in it and polish it . What's every one else been up to ?

  17. Well I've been riding for a year or two but never have I seen anything like this before . My helmet and the front of the bike are plastered in tiny white smudges that suggests I have been bombarded by tiny moths . Either I rode through a swarm of these things or they are everywhere . Weird or what ? IMG_20231008_172014799.thumb.jpg.5e41a6c46483e422aae6368a078958e9.jpg

With the bike (an me) off the road at the moment and the weather as rubbish as it is, I took the oppertunity to give the jacket and trousers a wash and re-proof..... Took longer to wash it than it did to dry for some reason 😂

Rubbish weather ? We're in a heatwave in Coventry .
