  1. Is possible to replace forks without splitting but its fiddly .

Good place for info is zzr-international.co.uk

Its one of my go to places to pick brains / gleam info for my zeds

But would you want to? If it's broken up inside, you'd be better off doing a rebuild to make sure you got all the bits out..

It's unlikely that anything has actually broken up. Most likely the sides of the selector fork prongs will have worn away. Unless they are really worn thin they will probably look like they were made that way. Here's a pic of a serviceable set from my old GSXR 1100 . If the smooth area is level with the casting then they are worn . If it's deeper than the casting they are very worn. Hope this helps.http://i.imgur.com/s1nVg45.jpg

  2. And what removes all those lovely metal bits stuck on the magnetic sump plugs ....

Old kwaks have dual level sumps so it would be a mission to make sure you got it all.

Totally agree, daftest idea I've heard in ages.

modern engines are mostly alloy, so how much use is a magnetic sump plug these days? whats it going to collect?

Modern engine cases are mostly alloy , cranks, gears and bearings are steel

  3. Everyone knows red is the fastest colour.

Yes red IS the fastest colour . Everyone except for two people knows this . Basic physics really.

Black is so much faster. Advanced physics, really.

Red Matter is more powerful than Dark Matter , I saw it in space film.
  4. Had exactly the same symptoms on a GSXR 1100 once. I hate to say this but its probably a worn selector fork deep in the gearbox.2nd gear gets a lot of abuse especially if previous owners like doing wheelies. A selector fork isn't expensive but its a big job to replace. You may be able to split the cases without removing the crank and top end by supporting the engine upside down in an improvised cradle. Good luck.

Heya fastbob, thanks for the reply. Apparently these zzr's have a notorious second gear issue, which is all i can find on the net, and that sometimes the selector fork goes wrong. I may be wrong, but i think i saw a thread somewhere where someone was able to swap the forks for a good set via the inspection cover, rather than splitting the case. I hope this is the case !!

    thanks again

    hmm...were they a gynaecologist ?
  5. Both, I'm planning a big tour of the Highlands and islands of Scotland on it in July then I'll sell it to pay for the trip and hopefully the next project. I've been meaning to do Scotland on a smaller slower bike for years.I plan to go A6 then B7078 and just take it easy.See first pic in recent post here My GSXR 1100.

  6. Blasphemy. :D

Theyre faster in green as well.

  9. Is that a WP you have? :) I loved mine which I had from new and was run in by 100,000 miles.

I have just thrown out my seat hump for my WP.

I am sure you don't need me to teach you to suck eggs but watch the oil level sight glass. It clouds up very easily and it can appear to have oil in but ends up being dry which = a big repair bill.

I still miss mine which was stolen at 140,000 miles from a Hotel car park whilst I was running a diploma course in Birmingham.

I believe we have chatted about this previously in another thread (good breakers) nice to hear from you again. Your enormous mileage is a source of great comfort to me! Re oil , its changed too often to run low but I'll keep an eye it. All the best!

  10. Thanks! It's done 35000 , 31000 by me . It's a 93 bike but it had only done 4000 when I bought it in 2006. It had been stored by the original buyer for 8 yrs with 27 miles on it . The second owner never took it over 100 mph ( he said) So when I got it it even smelled new. I only ride it 6 months a year. Mods include Dynojet,4 into 1 pipe, K&N and braided brake lines.
