  1. Its an option. So far she had one quote of £600 for 60 days - probably less than 10 hours of riding with an instructor.
  2. That's it now. Your last warning. Just in case the last 30 messages have landed in your spam bin. Happy February. You have either reinsured or you're uninsured. FCA will now handle your partial refund and MCE gets to walk away unscathed and dept free. That serves us right for dealing with a cheapskate. Maybe price comparison sites aren't that great after all?
  3. Before we start (assuming anyone reads this original post). She is too short for most bikes. Even the lowered ones. Seriously - we have been around this loop many times:- There are no riding schools who can offer a lowered bike including a Honda Rebel that she can learn on. yes really! My wife needs to buy a Honda rebel because its the only way that she can take an A2 test. The school can't insure it if they don't own it (and why would they). She needs to insure it to ride with an instructor (only). We are all ready ringing round but has anyone here actually done this?
  4. Found the grip limit on a roundabout this morning. slight off camber, 2°, moist and cold tyres. Just a twich but its a reminder to use correct body positioning!
  5. So a pedestian can step out into traffic and its the car drivers fault? What I really want to know is: who are the people who reviewed and signed all this off?
  6. Scooters are banned except in cirtain experimental locations.
  7. This news just in: "Once the policy is cancelled on the 31st of January 2022, your no claims bonus certificate will be emailed out to you if applicable. If you are replacing your policy with ourselves, new underwriters Sabre, and have been on cover for more than 8 months, we can honor the extra year, or if we are cancelling and you are choosing to go elsewhere if you have less than month remaining, we will also be issuing you the additional year, providing no claims have been made." So if you have been with them for less than 11 months you loose this year's NCB. In a way, that is right because its not a full year, but you can never get it back.
  8. BeMoto asked me for it. If MCE don't reply (to 3 messages) i might try sending my old policy document with the amount noted on it
  9. Did my DAS at 58. I'm 35,000 miles in. A 125 is the fastest thing in London. I did 2000 miles on a 125 then 12000 on a 500 before buying a "big" bike. I don't regret any of that experience. In fact I don't know why I bothered to go beyond 500. There is no actual gain except higher bills! I recomend lessons over time instead of a block couse. My wife tried that, but the schedule unraveled leaving insufficient time to complete Mod2.
  10. MCE are killing mine too. The whole industry knows it. MCE have be sliding down the toiled bowl for a while. They closed their UP help line a while ago so you could only renew on line. There are some deals out there. A while ago I found out on the meercat that my bike status was marked as "not purchased" yet so I corrected it am knocked £100 off. Just make sure your details and requirements are correct. My problen now is getting them to send confirmation of NCB.
  11. About time too! I'm only getting 8,000 mile out of a front and 16,000 mile out of a rear on my VFR
  12. Try Googleing "Harry Dunn" and you will find a lot of emotive newspaper articles but little detail. I expected that it would be a CBT rider since that content is extremely limited. It takes more than a single act of gross incompitance to cause an accident. We've all seen it and its easy to apportion 100% of blame. A modern A2 is actually quite advanced. I still don't know exacty what happened. I don't know what the Swedish nonsence is all about.
  13. Even worse to see that he was keen and actively learning. Its tough to get a licence at 19. Thanks for sharing the photos.
  14. The death of a motorcyclist - particularly a young one is heartbreaking. Does anyone know what licence he had. What type of bike he was on? Since he was 19, I suspect it was a CBT.
  15. If you are intending to progress to A2 or A, I would advise you to buy a cheap rat bike to practice on and drop. New bikes depreciate as soon as they leave the dealership and its heart breaking to drop your pride and joy. (clue :- you will drop it. You absolutly will).
  16. I played bass for 2 decades before I decided to take a lesson. It taught me to reposition my plucking hand and unlocked many things that I couldn't play cleanly before. You think you know something because you have been doing it for years and then you define something that you took for granted and you realise that you didn't.
  17. I completely agree, and I'm not suggesting that we ride at the limit. I'm not suggesting that we trail brake into blind apexes, but even with the best vision we can't see every patch of diesel, gravel, pothole, dead badger until we are right on top of it. Shouldn't we be practiced and ready to use it? Even to the point of; hand on leaver with the pads just engaged? Surly that has to be better that snatching at the brake at the last minute. Definetly better than a Police trained rider with stoic belief that: dragging the rear "stabilises the bike in a fast corner".
  18. I had a conversation with a CBT instructor today. An ex-police rider and someone high up in the IAM I think. So I got around to breaking into corners. He affirmed rear breaking into corners because "it stabilizes the bike", but never pressing the front brake because "it makes the bike sit up". He was also referencing "Motorcycle Roadcraft". I am surprised by this persistent thinking. Here is what M.R. actually says on pg 136: " Weight transfer during a turn will increase the self aligning effect and straighten the steering. This will happen if you apply the front brake. If you don't anticipate and counter the effect of weight transfer the bike will lift and straighten and sit up out of a turn. You can correct weight transfer by further counter steering." So its not bad if we plan for it. and:- "Using the back brake - Whilst cornering causes over-steering and normally tightens the turn." That doesn't sound nice. Motorbike racers always trail brake the front into bends. It pushes the front wheel down which increases grip on the steering and braking wheel. It also keeps the pads in contact with encourages more progressing braking control. Whats not to like about that? So why does this "drag the rear brake" idea persist even with the police? When are we going to start teaching trail braking?
  19. However: There is a long wait for a tuition and testing in many areas. Not everyone gets through an intensive DAS course first time. Mod 1 is a killer. Sometimes the fastest way is to take your time. Riding a 125 will teach you a lot while riding solo - including the Mod1 manuver set. 125s are faster than you think.
  20. With MCE apparently on the skids ( except its only their underwriter in Gibralter that ceased, except they can't alter existing policies, so still looking dodgy.) I started looking at what my hassle free alternative might be. My details were still on the meercat so I hit the go button. MCE still cheapest but all expensive. I went back in and started tweeking. Adding personally business use adds sod all as far as I can tell (MCE wanted £150 to make the change). Mileage doesn't seem to change it either. Then I noticed that in the date of purchase field I had "not purchased yet" checked So I entered the actual date. All of the quotes fell by 25%! I have no idea why that makes a difference, but also MCE aren't in the running any more. Odd.
  21. My wife started her DAS last week along side 4 others. One had passed CBT 7-8 months ago but not ridden since, another had only ridden a twist and go. The other 2 had way nore miles than her (2000). It takes all sorts. Put some slow speed miles on the 125 and you're good. Its Mod1 that scares everyone.
  22. Saturday; failed my IAM check ride again. Decided to give up. Too many things that I fundamentally diagree with that are gospel. I can't find an advantage to passing.
  23. "With effect from 5th November 2021, MCE Insurance Limited will no longer be placing new business and renewals with the Gibraltar based MCE Insurance Company Limited." Oh boy. This sounds like financial risk management ... or debt crisis management.
  24. Drilled the Missus arount the Mod 1 cones for an hour and killed my brake light switch. The second in 2 months
  25. Is there a record for the oldest Zombie thread? "bump!" by the way.
