  1. Also:- SIGN AND SHARE THIS PETITION. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/567582 Sorry but I hope you will allow me to cross post on the Motorbike chat forum - I think it benefits us all.
  2. I wrote to Grant Shapps, my MP, on the virtual of extending CBTs for people who are already riding. Nicholas Langly from his office wrote: "Dear Dave, Thank you for your email to Grant. After speaking to Grant about this he has asked me to reply on his behalf. Yes, that is correct , motorcycle training and testing, including Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), has been suspended. Grant fully appreciates the challenges that this will cause learners, motorcycle instructors and trainers but the Prime Minister, on the advice of scientific advisors, was clear that we need to take action. There are no plans to extend the two-year validity period of a CBT certificate. It is important that learners have the skills to be competent and safe riders and have up to date road safety knowledge as they prepare to take their test. To extend the validity period would require regulatory change. Minimising the risk to road safety has always been a priority in our response to COVID-19. Ensuring riders have the current relevant knowledge and hazard perception skills is a vital part of the training of riders, who are most at risk of being involved in an accident on the road. " So; 1/ok 2/ We know. 3/ Lets do something pointless. 4/ B.S. from the Department of regulatory Change. 5/ Missed the point of "already riding". The one heartening thing about this muppet fest of a government is that they will u-turn under the slightest pressure ....... without putting their foot down.
  3. There must be an area with a hundered post but I can't find it. Currently I use my phone BUT it's always 50 meters behind. Also; my cycle sat nav can program waypoints, but my car satnav and my phone can't. That's important if you want to follow a specific route. Are there any that can do that?
  4. Brand new heavy 1100cc bike for learning? Certainly not DAS. Maybe for transitioning but no school is going to buy one. I think Honda missed a trick by not squeezing a 600 into that frame, but that's a different question ..... so its back to the initial question.
  5. Just to clear this up:- From A2 to A and old enough to do it. either over 24, or 22 with 2 years experience. My wife currently has a CBT and pretty much the only bike she can get on is the Honda Rebel 500. Other bobbers and cruisers exist but they have forward pegs which are not optimal for putting your feet down (lets not debate forward pegs). So RIGHT NOW she has the option of A2 or nothing. Other low seat "A" bikes may come along one day. However the main reason for up grading might be that someone has had an A2 licence for 2 years an wants to transition ...... without having to take a full course ......again.
  6. GREAT! So we all agree the rules now. what do people actually do?
  7. Really? is this true? I have never heard of it. Definitely never seen an unaccompanied MT07 with L plates.
  8. Literally asking for a friend since I passed my DAS 2 years ago (my old posts are still here and I'm 28,000 miles in btw )! What is the best way to transition to full A licence? Take lessons again? Buy a 600cc bike and just do the test? Can you even get that insured?
  9. I appreciate that different bikes have different recommendations and that people find a setting that works for them, but that does not actually answer the question; what does it do, and how do you know if its working. Is this just one of those things that we don't actually know?
  10. So the modern general tyre standard is 36psi front 42 rear. In his tuning videos Dave Moss says that this is only a starting point (like static sag, but that's another conversation). What does deviating from that standard give you? Why would you do it? How would you know it worked?
  11. OK then, what does D.I.D mean?
  12. Other than fitting a replacement OEM chain, are there good and bad brands to look out for? What about coatings? The gold colour. Presumably its for corrosion resistance. Does it work?
  13. I listen to Brazilian music. Since Its in Portuguese and I don't understand Portuguese it doesn't engage the logic part of the brain. I just let it wash over me. Actually I find that it stops me getting bored and trying to end the ride early - Speeding.
  14. You are right. It probably why I see so many old fat blokes on 1200cc ADV bikes. It not fast but at least its loud. Contentious. They can be. I've been pulled for doing 40 on a dual carriage way (avoiding some dumb fcuk slow manoeuvring from a car that turned out to be plod), my dad got pulled for doing 70 on a dual carriageway (!), and my son got randomly pulled 4 times in 2 miles. I had a long conversation with an ex-plod who believed that all bicycles should be banned from the road. If you ever read "Motorcycle Roadcraft" you'd agree that its some useful content buried in the bleedin' obvious that you really shouldn't need to be told. Human beings are idiots as a species and plod is behind the innovation curve. (edit: they found my son's wallet once. jolly good show.)
  15. I'm not suggesting a camera blocking device, flip plates or anti Radar chaff. Just an extra tail light. Quite a bright one.
  16. just idle musing, but what if you had a really bright red light next to your number plate. Would that upset the camera? I don't know if they have a colour filter.
  17. Would like to see an abridged version with ONLY advanced content. My point here is that there is a difference between looking behind to assess traffic and concentrating on one bike more frequently to see if his indicators are flashing yet. 1/5 a second is a long time to not be looking where you are going!
  18. I agree with this. I just had my 2nd ride. We go out, stop, do feed back and then come back. it could be more constant. On the VFR the rearward viability requires more effort. I have to spend 40% of my attention searching for the observer to see what his signals are! A simple; "turn left here" would fix that.
  19. SCIENCE AND DEFINITIVE ANSWER ALERT I emailed the manufacturer and got this reply: "Main difference is that Pro Cool is Mono Propylene Glycol (MPG) based and Mag Cool is Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG) based but they also have different corrosion inhibitor systems as well. In some cases both would be suitable however Honda recommend and MEG based coolant so we would recommend Mag Cool." According to Monarch chemicals (and other sites): "The main difference between propylene glycol and ethylene is the level of toxicity. Propylene glycol has a very low toxicity, which is why it is also found in cosmetics and personal care products, whereas ethylene glycol is poisonous and must be handled with caution to restrict any human or animal exposure. So why not just use propylene glycol? There are a number of benefits using ethylene glycol over propylene glycol, especially in closed loop systems were risk of contact with food is minimal. For example, freeze point depression is much more effective using ethylene glycol – so more propylene glycol would be required to maintain the same freeze point as ethylene. As well as this, due to the lower viscosity of ethylene glycol it possesses excellent heat transfer properties." So there you have it. Pro cool is less toxic, Mag cool works better. Mag Cool is what is in the manual. It should also be more efficient being lighter to push round. It reinforces my belief that you should never buy anything called "pro", because it won't be.
  20. I was just about to order some Procool, but Sportsbikeshop only stocks magcool. I've read both spec forwards and backwards. They both seem to do the same thing. Does anyone know the real difference.
  21. Is there a map of fun roads. Alternatively, is there a navigation app that saves and shares them? I tried Riser but it doesn't know the difference between a twisty and a council estate.
  22. I passed my CBT 2 years ago. 3 bikes and 22,000 miles later, my first IAM observed ride is this Saturday. Here we go ......
  23. I would add to this. It is useful if you ride a bicycle for a while before you take your CBT, just it improve balance and get used to looking over your shoulder. If you want to move directly to Direct AccesS then book an intensive course with the same company that runs the CBT so they already know you. I believe it works out cheaper and you get more riding time. If you are going to wait before moving on to DAS or decide to take weekly lessons then buy a cheap used bike to practice with. You ARE going to drop it so don't buy a nice clean bike that you are scared to damage. Use it to practice the slow speed exercises - a lot! Either way the training company treats your test as a lesson so you ride to the test center under supervision on their bike.
  24. Just being Devil's advocate here:- How do we KNOW the the tyres are rubbish? It turns out that they're NOT from China after all but even if they were, So what? Half the components on all our bikes and 80% of everything else we buy comes from China. They can have good or bad specs just like anywhere else. In any case the Keyway superlight is a heavy bobber bike with a low CoG that makes 50MPH. There is a limit to how much trouble you can get into with that. Its not a superbike, the tyres wont look like superbike tyres. Maybe he should spend his money on gear that he will use on his future bike, petrol to do the learning that he bought it for, or training to go DAS.
  25. My wife is trying to book a theory test in Hertfordshire. However none of the local theory test centres are running motorcycle tests.
