  1. No actually I did get it twisted. I had convinced my self that current was flowing when the switched was pressed. It also seemed to get warm. With further measurment I have found that the opposit is true. In fact my last post is arguing with myself. Literally; 2 wires, a bulb and a battery. Where is that facepalm icon when you need it?
  2. The last 3 posters have reinforced what I have been saying - the switch opens when you press it. The question wasn't about whether is does this, but WHY design a circuit like that.. The repair is simple. I already have the switch. The second odd thing is this it has stopped failing now.
  3. I thought of that, but its a Honda VFR800 6 gen (2002 - 2009) so; no. Besides, there is no dash error light. I previously changed the side lite bulbs to LED which would usually throw a hissy fit. Its not just Hondas. Its common to Nissin master cylinders. Yamahas use it too.
  4. No the switch is normally closed i.e. "on" when the brake leaver is not squeezed. I took it out and tested it on a multimetrer. That circuit could not work in any other way. I could be wrong about the actual current. I had to use the 20A setting as my small reading fuse is blown. However, the switch gets warm at rest while the brake light is off. That is definetly what is happening. I just can't figure out why.
  5. I had a failed front brake switch. These things happen. What surprised me during testing is that the switch passes 3Amp while its off!. I would expect that a circuit would be cold until the leaver is pulled and current flows to the light, even if there was a relay in the circuit. What actually happens is that the circuit is active until the leaver is pulled and current stops. That must trigger the relay. So normally on instead of normally off. The switch is a standard part in many bikes so it must be a standard circuit. Does anyone know why?
  6. On the VFR I will definetly go for remote preload. I was just interested in whether the average rider could tell if the rebound was set differently to the compression. I can see how you could get it hoplessly wrong though!
  7. I'm considering fitting a Nitron Rear shock to my VFR800, because stock are natoriously carp. Its not that the ride is bad, but the damping adjustment does nothing and VFRs are usually under sprung. The choise is between the R1 (damping adjustment) and R2 (independent rebound and damping adjustments). Would I be able to notice the effect of independent adjustment on the road?
  8. The situation unfolds. The VFR from new was built with progressive springs - entirely reasonable for a sports tourer but sprung for a 75kg rider! I've been looking for a stiffer set. Some companies offer a single option. The chap I spoke to yesterday was convinced that his offering was 20% stiffer than standard but didn't know what standard is. Guess what? He quotes me the standard numbers. I'm sure he knows more than me but ...... How many bikes use progressive fork springs as standard? Are all upgrades simple springs?
  9. I want to fit stiffer fork springs in my VFR. I know the size and spring rate that I need:- 37mm dia. 334.3 Long, .85 - 1.1Kg/ mm. My local bike mechanic can get springs but talking to him on the phone it seem like the springs in the catalogue he uses are the same as OEM. (.72 - 9.5kg/mm). I decided that I should point him in the right direction to avoid ambiguity. The trouble is that in all my long life I have rarely bought car or bike spares that weren't manufacture spec. You might think that it would be a simple job. What am I missing?
  10. I literally just opened the box on a Revit Vertex mesh jacket. At £133 from FCmoto (and no taxes) there are many more expensive jackets out there and if I hadn't wanted shoulder sliders I could have bought even cheaper. First thoughts are that I measure as a XL and it fits me (win). It seams to be for a guy with skinny arms though. Tried it on and sat on my bike VFR800 in aero-tuck mode. It possibly rides up a little, but on a more upright bike it wouldn't. The included CE1 armor is (remarkably? worryingly?) thinner than other jackets I own, but maybe those are just fat to make up for being less technical. No back protector and no internal layer. Good on both counts. I dislike paying for standard armor when I'm just going to bin it and fit Level2 and who wants a body warmer in summer???? Possibly I would buy a rain jacket for over the top but a waterproof inner would be just dumb. Anyway I hope that gives you points to think about when you shop around.
  11. I was checking online to find out the date for my MOT and it flagged up untaxed! OK, so maybe I missed the letter. No worries. I went on line, but it only lets you tax it from the beginning of the month. Is there a way to pay the outstanding amount? Do they come looking ?
  12. The KSI statictics list age but not experience or qualifications so they are not really relavent here. I too come from a time when a licenced car driver could ride a 125 with no other training. Its better now. At least there is training. The whole method of transitioning from CBT to full licence is flawed. The fundimental thing is that regardless of training some riders are just better than others. Some riders get drunk on power. So are just not natural riders and the difference in outcome between "good" and "just bearly" is far more pronounced on a bike than a car. Why else would it be possible to pass a test on a Corsa and jump behind the wheel of a Masaratti?
  13. Its actual a Chinese K-lite. Only 1000 miles on it, so its possible that the clutch hasn't worn in yet.
  14. My wife's bike suffers from this. Is there a standard fix that works for most bikes?
  15. Please read original post. All, It turns out that her insurer will insure for the CBT (but would cancel the policy if she failed).
  16. No, but thanks. The didn't offer a quote or a reason why.
  17. Its still cold in the mornings. so that's one thing. The only time that I really scared myself is when I found a stretch of tarmac that had be pushed down by heavy trucks (I found out later). the road just rolls away from you. taking the grip with it. Applying the throttle in the way that's usual for you may still be harsh. I know that on my bike some people complain about killing their tyres after 3000miles. Mine has over 10,000 and I cant see any wear or squaring off yet. I only know that I add throttle progressively and I don't steer with the rear. For you own piece of mind you should ride that corner a little more slowly to check it out and then build up again.
  18. Precisely this. I can't change what that school bike are and it does not affect the fact that she can't ride them. The question is about insurance. Its genuine issue that affects a lot of people who CBTs were not extended during the pandemic. However I guess people like to clog up a thread with irrelevant points of view. That's not rude at all, is it.
  19. Don't know. Don't care. Not the subject of the thread.
  20. I can ride a motorcycle. When I took mine the guy only ran geared bikes. This school has a slot in 2 weeks time because she booked a while ago. It is what it is. There are other schools but they have a waiting list that is months long. This is the opportunity. The question is how to take advantage of it.
  21. Here's the big question. The one that NO one asks:- Why does a CBT expire after 2 years? Do skills expire? If so, why not car driving? why not the full A license? If skills DO expire, why 2 years? Is that a scientifically establish number? Exactly 2 years! why not 18 months 36? Its an arbitrary number, so why was it so hard to extent a CBT?
  22. My wife's CBT expired during Covid. She has booked to do another very soon. Obviously (probably obvious!) she is not insured to ride her bike without a CBT. However, she is super short and very limited in bikes she can get on (please don't suggest a list of potential bikes. We know them), so she wants to do the course on her own bike. The centre used to have a scooted but not any more. Are insurers will/able to insure for riding while under instruction? She has already called her insurer but they don't know yet(!)
  23. My wife's CBT has already expired. I'm surprised that they haven't prioritised people who need it for work.
