  1. Other than copperslip, what did you use?
  2. Ok I might buy them now cos they're cheap. Does anyone here grease the back of the pads? In all the cars I've owned I have never greased them. Never heard of a garage do it either. If so what do you use?
  3. According to my Haynes manual, the minimum pad thickness is front 3.5 and rear 5mm. I just want to confirm that is the thickness of brake material remaining on the pad? It seems like a lot. How thick are new ones?
  4. You left a tip, right? Otherwise that's just plain rude. Gosh! I wish I had your experience. I've no crashes to learn from
  5. I didn't notice it on my previous bikes but on the VFR, when I lift my boot sometime the peg comes up with it. For a while I thought my boot or trousers were snagging on something (quite scary). Why aren't they fixed? a solid peg might act as a frame slider. Perhaps some are?
  6. Which occupations are cheapest?
  7. Don't forget that there is a CBT and learners forum here. A lot of people will have asked the same questions. ( myself included 2 years ago). With cornering control you have to remember that you have a low power, low mass engine. The clutch is inclined to snatch. You need to practice slipping the clutch in low speed maneuvers. It's ok to rev the nuts off it. Speed comes fro the clutch, not the throttle. Get yourself to a dissused carpark with a tennis ball, cut in half . Set them 6 big strides apart. Now do figure 8s for an hour. Edit:- I do a lot of lane splitting and filtering. At low speed I use the rear brake because it leaves your hand free to concentrate on the throttle. Thought:- There aught to be classes for post-CBT guys who are trying to hone their skills.
  8. I feel guilty about selling on my last bike to a guy who had not passed his test yet. Obviously all tests are frozen right now , so he won't be riding it for weeks yet. Another thing is about buying your dream bike as a first bike. How will you feel if you drop it? There is something to be said about buying a piece of junk that you don't care about and if you kill it, so what? OK you're disregarding those things so ...... how about a reminder that we are currently at war with a the worst pandemic for 90 years? The fallout from that with be a massive wealth shift. People will loose their jobs and we don't know what the impact and secondary impact could be. It might be that you can't keep up repayments. Its almost curtain the the marker will be flooded with used toys and dealers fighting to reduce their stock liability. I would wait a couple of months at least.
  9. I don't know about that but back in the day a Yamaha FS1E could hit 30MPH. We weren't wealthy enough to have one. One reason why my riding carrier started only recently.
  10. Not classroom based. Outdoor, non contact. I would think that a 125 would be a really useful way of avoiding public transport right now.
  11. Wait .... touring bikes don't have them as standard? That's right, so I need to fit one. I did try a fiberglass one but it was poorly made. Got a refund. Moving on .... Who has fitted on to a VFR AND done some miles on it AND it didn't break AND you still like it? Which ones work? Which materials work?
  12. cunning plan.
  13. So the UK is mostly locked down with Covid-19 I just got a call from my mechanic. Its booked in for routine work. I was expecting it to be about cancellation but no. They will be open. Here's the thing though. I will need to deliver it and I cant wait around while they work, the wife will need to pick up and drop off. Is that legal?
  14. actually......; Panic over lads. It turns out is has a solid state hard drive so its pretty much vibration proof.
  15. My company has given me a lappy to bring home every night. I don't like the idea of it rattling around my topbox. Any suggestions?
  16. I could fly of course but assuming all the borders have not closed what is the quickest, most cost effective way? We dont have a touring section.
  17. That checks if it has enough. Not how much.
  18. Is there a SIMPLE reliable way to varify the capacity of a 12V lead acid battery? I have it on an optimate which says its heathly but I would still like a real world check. I have several multimeters.
  19. My heroine is Itchy Boots" on You Tube. She Rides a Royal Enfield Himalian, currently up through South America. Its bigger but a slow and steady bike. There's plenty of time for looking around.
  20. The VFR doesn't have many places to run cable. I might have to run close to the engine. I don't trust normal PVC wire. What should I use and where can I get it?
  21. Post bike review - At the end of a year and 13,000 miles I decided to change bike so I thought it was time to write a longer term review using my new to me bike - VFR800 Vtec as a reference. Since writing the initial review I changed my job and the focus of riding. Whereas riding to work had been a joy, the new location through London made it a requirement. As such it was clocking up milage at a rate that might make selling it later a difficult task. That said, I had no mechanical issues. not even a missed start. The bike has no vices. The cornering is so controlled an my journey from upright commuter to chicken stripless corner slayer was achieved prograssivly. I never dropped it. Power wise it gets up there but 80MPH needs 6000RPM from a bike with a rev limit of 8500. It will cruise all day at 60 - 70MPH and I did fit it with pannier racks. So its a 75MPG sports tourer. Seriously, for distance, why not? It could use a slightly taller screen with the VFR's trick of air flow from under the screen to reduce buffeting. My last 8000 miles were commuting through London. It does lane splitting at 10 - 40 MPH in traffic very well, which the VFR does not with the exception that the high wing mirrors seem to be at everyone elses wing mirror height, which reduces your usable width. Scooters handle better of course because of their low C of G. Powerful sports bikes rip away from the lights better, but not much - if thats your thing. Actually the VFR doesn't cool at 20 without the fan. The VFR is heavier in every respect. I can't imagine it on rough terain where as the CBR's brother the CB500X is exactly the same bike with different fairings and tires! I can't inagine picking a VFR up by myself either. The bike I WOULD have liked to own would be exactly the same spec with a parrallel twin bored out to 600CC. Yeah, A viceless 58HP bike. I could live with that.
  22. there is no such thing as release agent. It's just that the tyres are slick. Scrubbing in is just that.
  23. On my last bike I had a relay wired into the tail light so that services only ran with the ignition on. From there into a fuse box as a distro. My new ride does not have as much space. I'm sure I have seen combined Relay fuseboxes. Does anyone know where to buy one?
  24. Current must go the earth through something. Is it possible that its going through the solenoid direct to ground? If the solenoid was iffy before and shorting it out starts the motor then we must be looking at a bad solenoid. One last check is to take a lead from the solenoid's ignition connection (the one you didn't short out yet) direct to the battery.
  25. ....chocolate digestives set to stun.
